Description: Volunteer abroad at Costa Rica and Nicaragua to gain unique, hands-on, veterinary experience at low-cost spay/neuter clinics & visiting farms to treat livestock. Provide hands on assistance to vets during surgeries, treat companion, livestock, and exotic animals! The total cost for the trip is $2140, which includes lodging, any fees for tourist sites, transportation & most meals.

Opening Doors’ mission is to empower refugees, immigrants, human trafficking survivors, and underserved Sacramento area residents to achieve self-sufficiency by accessing opportunities to mainstream economic and social systems. THREE internships are available:

Grant Writing Internship

Opening Doors seeks candidates with excellent writing skills for its Communications and Grant-writing internships.  These unpaid positions provide interns with real-world writing experience, as well as a number of skill sets relating to grant-writing and communications work.  Opening Doors’ grant writing intern will have a key role in developing and maintaining the organization’s development efforts. The intern will work closely with the deputy director and program staff, researching funding opportunities and potential funders, and developing grant proposals. The intern will also maintain agency records which track research on funders and the status of submitted proposals. Because effective grant writing demands a comprehensive grasp of program services the intern will focus on one of Opening Doors’ three core programs.

During the first three months, the intern will be mentored by the current grant writing intern; then he or she will assist with recruiting, interviewing, and selecting a new grant writing intern.  During their final three months the intern will mentor the new grant writing intern.

Requirements: Excellent written and oral communication skills, Ability to work independently, Comfortable working on teams in a fast-paced environment, High level of attention to details, Willingness to learn the basics of grant writing

Immigration Legal Services (ILS) Case Management Internship:

The undergraduate ILS program intern reports to the Director of Immigration Legal Services. They have responsibilities of assisting in case management and meeting outreach goals. The ILS program intern will also have responsibilities in managing the everyday operations of the ILS program including, but not limited to, scheduling appointments, file organization, and case managing immigrants who are victims of crime.

The ILS interns are responsible for understanding program objectives including a basic understanding of the immigration services offered by Opening doors.

Case Management Duties

• Contact clients after their initial consultation to follow up with the status of their case.
• Ensure required documentation and activities are thorough, complete and submitted by client
• Provide on-going monitoring of client’s progress through phone calls, email exchange, and in-person meetings

Outreach Duties

• Updating and maintaining a database of community outreach contacts
• Developing letters and fact sheets and other informational materials about ILS services for outreach purposes
• Ensuring timely follow up to all inquiries and meetings

General Office Duties

General Office duties: filing, answering phones, and coordinating the Outlook calendar for scheduling ILS appointments.

Qualifications:

• Fluent in written and spoken Spanish
• Microsoft Word; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Outlook
• Excellent research, writing and organizational skills
• Excellent verbal communications skills
• Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish
• Willing to work in fast-paced environmen

Survivors of Human Trafficking Internship:

Opening Doors, Inc. interns gain invaluable practical experience and skills in such areas as business development, community development, database creation, program management, funds development, event coordination, as well as case management experience in aiding survivors of human trafficking. They create important links with individuals in the Sacramento area business and non-profit communities.  In addition, they enjoy the experience of participating in a vibrant, capable team, creating change in the lives of people who are striving to reach their dreams.  Numerous opportunities to strengthen language skills and further multi-cultural awareness are also available. 

The interns are chosen through a highly selective process.  Outstanding academic records as well as the ability to act and communicate in a professional environment are prerequisites. The most important characteristics needed to succeed in the internship program are a can-do attitude, excellent communication skills and a great eagerness to learn.  Interns are considered volunteers and will not receive monetary compensation for their work.  At the end of the internship program the intern will receive a letter of recommendation.
