Internships

Internships are an excellent opportunity to get career training and applied research in your field. Most facilities internship programs are heavily in demand each year, so it is best to take advantage and apply as early as possible. Check each program for application deadlines; many have deadlines as early as six months to a year in advance from the actual internship starting date.

ENGINEERS! You may also want to consider engineering internships available through the Washington Program or UC Center Sacramento. We also have information about international internships.

Argonne National Laboratory
ANL Graphic The nation's first national laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory is one of the U.S. Department of Energy's largest research centers. Today, Argonne occupies two sites. The Illinois site is surrounded by forest preserve about 25 miles southwest of Chicago's Loop. Argonne-West occupies about 900 acres about 50 miles west of Idaho Falls in the Snake River Valley. It is home of most of Argonne's major nuclear reactor research facilities.

Brookhaven National Laboratory
BNL Graphic The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory creates and operates major facilities available to the university, industrial and government personnel for basic and applied research in physical, biomedical and environmental sciences, and in selected energy technologies. The laboratory is operated by Brookhaven Science Associates, a not-for-profit research management company, under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
LBNL Graphic Founded by Ernest Orlando Lawrence, who lead revolutionary discoveries in the field of particle physics, Berkeley Labs is a multiprogram laboratory where research in advanced materials, life sciences, energy efficiency, deters and accelerators serves America's needs in technology and the environment.

Berkeley Lab is located on the hillside above the University of California at Berkeley and employs more than 4,000 people, of which about 600 are students. Each year, the Lab also hosts more than 2,000 participating guests. LBNL is managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Los Alamos National Laboratory
LANL Graphic Los Alamos National Laboratory is one of twenty-eight Department of Energy laboratories across the country. It is managed for the DOE by the University of California. The Laboratory is the largest institution and the largets employer in Northern New Mexico with approximately 6,800 University of California employees plus approximately 2,800 contractor personnel.

Approximately one-third of the Laboratory's technical staff members are physicists, one-fourth are engineers, one-sixth are chemists and materials scientists, and the remainder work in mathematics and computational science, biological science, geoscience, and other disciplines. Professional scientists and students also visit Los Alamos to collaborate with universities and industry in both basic and applied research to develop resources for the future.

Sandia National Laboratories
SNL Graphic Sandia is a national security laboratory operated for the U.S. Department of Energy by the Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Co. SNL designs all non-nuclear components for the nation's nuclear weapons, performs a wide variety of energy research and development projects, and works on assignments that respond to national security threats -- both military and economic.

Today, Sandia has two primary facilities, a large laboratory and headquarters in Albuquerque (more than 6,700 employees) and a smaller laboratory in Livermore, California (about 900 employees).
