Welcome Prospective Student

In addition to the excellent o admissions information and other o on-line resources for prospective students offered by the campus, the pages here summarize internship opportunities and career decision support available to you as a UC Davis student through the Internship and Career Center.

As a Davis student you can gain experience and recognition through involvement in one of hundreds of businesses, industries, community service organizations, governmental agencies, and research laboratories. Each year, the Internship and Career Center places approximately 6,000 students in internships that provide practical experience to complement coursework. (Only students in good standing currently enrolled in a University of California Davis degree program are eligible for internships.) Full-time during the summer and part-time throughout the academic year, Davis students gain experience in advertising agencies, retail businesses, financial and consulting firms, environmental protection agencies, hospitals and clinics, import-export companies, law offices, high tech companies, manufacturing firms, schools, counseling centers, museums, regulatory and enforcement agencies, public relations firms, radio and TV stations, zoos, and hundreds of other places.

A variety of internships are available in the City of Davis and nearby communities. Alone among the University of California campuses, UC Davis is within easy commuting distance of Sacramento, with its unique opportunities for people who are interested in law, politics, and state government. While concentrated in northern California, Davis interns are found throughout the state, nation and world. In addition to placements arranged through the ICC, Davis students from all colleges and majors find openings through our affiliated UC Davis Washington Program and, while attending foreign universities, under the auspices of the Education Abroad Center. Through University Extension and Summer Sessions we recently initiated a program that sends Davis students to internships in Europe and Asia while foreign students benefit from internships here. Increasing the number of international opportunities is one of the Internship and Career Center's top priorities. Participants in our newly unveiled London Internship Program will combine coursework on British Technology and Culture with carefully chosen internships at British firms.

Internships are imbedded in UC Davis culture, and there are good reasons why so many thousands of students view them as essential. Internships are great preparation for graduate and professional schools, as well as for launching a career. Internships allow students to explore their interests and skills, evaluate their preliminary career plans, and change direction if need be. An internship adds a powerful line to a student's resume, and most sponsors are eager to write enthusiastic letters of recommendation in return for good service. Some sponsors offer their interns full time career employment after they graduate.

A large proportion of our internships - for example, working as a teacher's aide, counseling people, helping the public defender, or cleaning up the environment - qualify as public service. Students who complete internship requirements have their accomplishments listed on their official transcripts, and, if concurrently enrolled in courses with 92 or 192 designations, earn academic units that count towards graduation. Engagement in community and public service is an important part of the UC Davis vision.

Internship and Career Center staff builds strong collaborative relationships with internship sponsors and ensures that students work with qualified mentors in settings conducive to learning. Over the years, thousands of agencies, businesses and firms have sponsored Davis students. A few examples are Apple Computer, the California Department of Water Resources, Caltrans, Davis Public Schools, Delloitte and Touche, Genentech, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Gap Inc., General Mills, Hays Trucking, Hewlett Packard, Industrial Light and Magic, Intel Corporation, Mervyns of California, Phillips Chiropractic, the Sacramento Zoo, Senator Barbara Boxer, the UC Davis Medical Center, the US Bureau of Land Reclamation, the US Department of State, the US Forest Service, and Walt Disney Imagineering, and the YMCA.

In the sections that follow you will read comments from students who completed internships during in recent years. Although these testimonials are based on recent student experiences, please note that internship availability changes day by day. The internships that we list on our Web Site are exclusively for UC Davis students. If you are currently enrolled you can view internships that are available today by proceeding to Aggie Job Link and registering for an account.

As you think about the kind of internship that might fit you, we recommend avoiding prejudices and preconceptions and casting a wide net. For example, an English student could benefit from a writing internship at a high tech company, and a Computer Science student can gain valuable experience from helping the California Youth Authority develop new software. For your convenience, we have arranged these excerpts into eight categories based on common career interests: Agriculture and Environment, Business, Community and Public Service, Education and Counseling, Engineering, Law and Politics, Medicine, and Science. Click on any one of these headings to find examples of internships that might be of interest to you.
