Agriculture internships are found at farms, nurseries, food and produce
companies, seed companies, wineries, and agricultural industry trade groups.
Agriculture interns are involved in all
phases of agriculture including
research, production, and distribution. They help increase crop yield, oversee
food processing and canning, develop marketing campaigns, and help "balance the
books" in accounting departments. Environmental interns are involved in
research and consulting, meteorology, air and water resource monitoring and
management, health and safety risk assessment, industrial hygiene, toxicology,
wildlife biology, forestry, environmental education, and remote sensing.
Student Experiences:
Taco Bell
"As a product development intern with Taco Bell, I was given many
responsibilities and challenges, including: brainstorming and developing new
menu items; giving project support to other team members by researching product
reformulation procedures; cost optimization of food products; and analyzing the
impact of food and packaging costs. I interacted with multiple departments:
Quality Assurance; Engineering; Marketing and Packaging, and was introduced to
numerous computer programs. At the end of my internship I gave a Power Point
presentation to the Product Development team. In completing this internship, it
has greatly influenced my desire to attend both graduate and business school.
Truly, the Taco Bell Corporation surpassed my most positive expectations and
delivered on a great employment opportunity."

Hines Nursery
"The internship program offered by Hines Nursery was a comprehensive
and rewarding experience. I found the internship educational in experiencing
the variability in working conditions, and the extensive network of departments
required to run a large growing operation. I have a great appreciation for the
workers who may have to work in harsh conditions, and my experience will
definitely affect my judgment if I ever manage a similar group of employees.
Rotating through the various departments and seeing and experiencing the extent
of what is required to operate a wholesale nursery has reassured me that
I have chosen the appropriate career for myself."

Quanterra Environmental Services
"My internship at Quanterra Environmental
Services at West Sacramento gave me a
professional view of a full-service environmental analytical laboratory
performing routine sample analyses for organic and inorganic constituents using
state-of-the-art instrumentation. I had the wonderful opportunity to apply all
the theory and technique for identifying organic compounds which constitute an
essential introduction to my career goal of being an organic chemist."
- Chemistry student working at Quanterra Environmental Services
California Department of Pesticide Regulation
"I have learned how the information I am learning as an Environmental
Toxicology major helps to determine the safety of pesticides. I have been given
the opportunity to look at original lab reports that are not normally
publicized. I feel that my scientific writing skills have been more practiced
and refined from participating in this internship. This
internship will definitely help me to get a career after graduation.."
- Environmental Toxicology major serving with the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
Yolo Basin Foundation
"My job as a Flyway Assistant is to lead activities in the
demonstration wetlands and also assist the naturalist while in the wildlife
area. The activities that I have led in the time I have been working at YBF are
soil percolation, hedge planting, plant identification, pond water activities
and the un-nature trail.. I assist in setting up spotting scopes, helping the
students focus their binoculars and identifying birds. On weekends, I have also
begun to assist Audubon specialists on the tours that are held for the public.
Overall I feel that I am gaining a tremendous amount of experience for future
courses . in wildlife biology and for any career direction I choose to
follow."

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
"Through my
internship with NRCS, I have learned a variety of field techniques and
procedures, useful and applicable to any type of data collection in the field.
During this project, I learned how to identify different grass species, use
statistical methods to ensure that the samples were taken randomly, and
consolidate data into a useful form."
- Environmental
Resources major interning with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
California State Parks
"Not only have I learned quite a bit about library
science and research techniques, I also have had a glimpse into an area of
historical preservation, which I did not know very much about. I am interested
in a career related to museum studies so this internship in archiving has been
incredibly valuable."
- History major interning with the California State Parks.
California State Water Resources Control Board
"I was fortunate in that when I started working for the SWRCB I
was concurrently taking a class on water law here at the university, where we
learned all about the SWRCB and its functions. I have become intimately
familiar with sections 401 and 404 of the Clean Water Act, in addition to
learning about state water law, such as the Porter-Cologne act and how it helps
us protect wetland resources. This job is valuable in that I can get some
perspective on what it's like to work in ecology in California, especially, I
need to know water and water rights, and this is a step in that
direction..."
