Business

Almost every job you can think of - ranging from joining on as a management trainee at a major bank to becoming the assistant curator of a museum - has a business component. Davis interns from all majors build their business credentials as they gain experience in accounting, advertising, finance, design and manufacturing, human resources, sales, and strategic planning. Davis interns show and sell art, develop advertising campaigns, complete paperwork for international shipping, sell radio advertisements, conduct international marketing studies, and assist accounting and human resource executives. Just a few of the companies that have sponsored business interns are Access Information Services, Blue Diamond, California Trade and Commerce Agency, the Free Art Museum of San Francisco, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Orient Overseas Container Line, R.H. Phillips Winery, POGO.COM, Timco, UUNET, Wall of Hope, and the Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation.

Student Experiences:

Mykindaplace.com

"I was a little wary of interning for a website, and mortified when I realized it was for a website targeted at 17 year old girls. My first task, my supervisor said with a straight face, was to write a Leonardo DiCaprio quiz for this month's Super Fan. After that first day, I thought I was doomed to teenybopper trash. However, as the days went by, I surprisingly began to enjoy it. ... I was also assigned to write film reviews. It was amazing to be treated as a real film critic ...and watch a film with only five other people in the room... Mykindaplace.com is a small company (for now), with a small staff that is ...friendly and comfortable. The assignments are... challenging, rewarding and a lot of fun. ..."
- Social science student working at Mykindaplace.com.

Schering Corporation

"My biggest project or accomplishment was a program I hosted in Davis for about 20 doctors. I contacted an allergist in Woodland . to speak on behalf of Schering on one of our products, Nasonex. The event took place at the Palm Court Hotel in Davis and was catered by Café Bernardo. There was also a wine tasting presentation by Valley Wine Co. in Davis. The event was a complete success as the doctors were educated on the safety and efficacy of Nasonex, while enjoying dinner and wine at the same time. The internship was a great experience for me. I was able to use my background in biology as well as my previous experience in sales together to help me excel."
- Biological Sciences major learning pharmaceutical sales at the Schering Corporation.

IBM

"I was able to learn so much about the working world, the people, and the prospects of my profession as a programmer. My involvement in a big company such as IBM helped me see what it takes to be a real programmer. Not only must you e able to work and communicate well with others, you must be self-motivated and challenged. ...I leave with a firm belief that my experiences here will be helpful for future advances and job opportunities. Moreover I have the understanding or competence to see what it takes to be successful in my career."
- Computer Science major interning at International Business Machines.

Marcus Millichamp

"I learned how to design an effective presentation to present facts and analysis to individuals without any technical background.[The internship] provided me with valuable contacts in the business world and culminated in an offer [to become] a junior investment broker after I graduate..."
- Economics major working at Marcus & Millichamp.

Sacramento Theatre

"Theatre really is an interesting world, mostly because it is so far from what I am used to. The budget is never big and there are a lot of uncertainties in the arts, but everyone is very committed in spite of it all. Although I finished my major this quarter and have therefore spent three years focusing on politics, I really like the idea of throwing out "the plan" and doing something like this. This was probably the best part of the internship."
- Political Science major at the Sacramento Theatre Company.

Davis Enterprise

"Interning at the Davis Enterprise for the past quarter has been a challenging experience. I found assignments to be very valuable in exposure to the advertising and marketing fields. By taking part in the daily routines of a newspaper office, I was able to experience what it was like to work in a professional, fast-paced environment. Due to the demands of generating ads rapidly, I had to train myself to come up with ideas much faster than I normally would have. Interning in a deadline oriented work setting has provided me with a new perspective on the graphic design profession."
- Design student doing an advertising internship at the Davis Enterprise.

Davis Community TV

"My future career plans are right on course with this internship. This helped to make up my mind that television and the entertainment industry is the industry that I want to be involved in for the rest of my life."
- Sociology major interning as a television production intern at Davis Community Television.

The GAP

"In the future I could easily see myself heading the Human Resource Department for GAP, Inc. In my opinion it is a wonderful company in which to be employed. I urge everyone with a major in psychology, management, or business to look into this internship."
- Psychology student working as a management trainee at The Gap.

KQED

"My first project was to assemble a list of reporters whose beat was to write about youth-related issues in local papers. Being detail-oriented and patient were two skills that I applied to this assignment. My second project was to conduct some media research for a series of commercials currently in production. .Being creative and resourceful were two abilities that I exercised in this project."
- English major working as a public relations intern at KQED (TV).

SF World Trade Center

"Being an intern at the WTC was both interesting and challenging. Every spring the WTC organizes a Consular Corps Luncheon, which is a huge networking event with consular, political representatives, and community businesses. I had to apply basic knowledge of geography and culture combined with communication abilities to maintain the ties over the phone as well as the mail."
- Economics major working as a market research intern at the San Francisco World Trade Center

Center for International Trade and Development

"The Internship with CITD proved to be an extremely informative and educational experience. It provided good insight into the function of the modern workplace, the process of initiating and continuing international trade, and the laws and restrictions surrounding international business."
- Spanish and International Relations major working as an international trade intern at the Center for International Trade and Development.

Koret of California

"I really enjoy the work that a merchandise assistant does. I help develop the concept of next season's line and really work to make a designer's, as well as my own, ideas come true. Every product that the consumer sees in a store such as the Gap. is made possible by the ideas of the designer and merchandiser. My possibilities in the retail industry are endless."
- Textiles and clothing major interning at Koret of California.

Hornblower Cruises and Events

"My absolute first assignment was to get my body adjusted to the rocking boat I would be working on. The purpose of my internship was to assist and learn the functions of the Human Resources Department in a corporate environment. I was also to assist with day to day employee issues."
- Human Development student working with Hornblower Cruises and Events.

Morgan Stanley Dean Witter

"My favorite part of the internship was when I got to do some technical analysis. I honestly feel that I may have found my niche in this arena . I got to interact with some clients and give my two cents on a stock evaluation. I loved wearing a suit to work everyday. Certain behaviors are expected of everybody and although we all know this as we sit in a classroom, these are key to our success."
- Communications major serving as a junior analyst at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.

General Mills

"I see my summer job experience at General Mills and the responsibilities that were bestowed upon me as being extremely useful... I believe that my technical exposure to the various types of machinery, mechanical processes, and maintenance will be a tremendous asset. I had no knowledge of a production plant beforehand; after working in one for three months, I now understand many of the inherent issues, problems and challenges, and my knowledge will most probably help me with my future career. Furthermore, I gained determination and self-worth form my projects and responsibilities within the corporate world; this confidence will be beneficial in all of my academic and career pursuits in the future."
- A Chemical Engineering major working as a food intern at General Mills.

United Parcel Service

"The internship in the marketing offices of the United Parcel Service proved to be unique, informative, and one of the most educational experiences of my college career thus far. The analysis required of the two-person team was in-depth and demanding, but attainable with hard work. I felt that this internship has been the most helpful in preparing me for the 'real world' and corporate business."
- Spanish and International Relations student working as a market analyst at United Parcel Service.
