Frequently Asked Questions
Education and Counseling
Many of our interns find their lives enriched as they work with children in schools and counseling people in
all kinds of settings. In Davis and in nearby towns Davis students learn as teachers aids, tutors, and counselors.
Right now, California and the nation need huge numbers of teachers, and for the next few years at least K-12
education offers a very promising careers.
Human development students, psychology students, and other students who like to work with people work with sports teams, at
summer camps, at battered women shelters, homes for abused children, assisted living and extended care facilities, and
half-way houses for the mentally ill. Representative sponsors include the Barbara Milliff Children's Center, Child Haven, the
Circus Arts and Acrobatics School, Davis School District, Davis Waldorf School, Evergreen Elementary, 4-H, Pine Tree Gardens,
Planned Parenthood, Progress Ranch, Suicide Prevention, Summerbridge, Winters Middle School, Yolo County School Services, and
the Yolo County Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center.
Student Experiences:
Davis Senior High School
"I had never seen a classroom and a school from behind the scenes, but
this internship gave me that opportunity. I was able to see how lesson plans
were made, how field trips got approved, how overhead projectors were acquired,
how tests and quizzes were made, and how textbooks were chosen. Most
importantly, though, I was able to talk to Mr. Ross about teaching. He imparted
a lot of great knowledge to me that I am sure I will take to my first and last
teaching assignments."

Farmhouse of the Yolo County Care Continuum
"The YCCC Farmhouse is a residential treatment program for mentally ill
adults... Interning at the Farmhouse was a very rewarding experience ... I gained a
lot of knowledge from the staff and clients about mental illness, treatment,
and the "politics" of the system. The staff taught me a great deal
about the mental health system, the procedures taken in the event of a crisis,
and how one goes about having a career in mental health."

Greengate School for Exceptional Students
"In all honesty, before deciding to go through with this
internship, I was nervous and a little scared. I had never worked with children
with disabilities and I wasn't sure what to expect. I had no idea to what
degree of seriousness the disabilities were going to be, and I questioned
whether or not I would be able to handle it. But after my first day with the
kids at Greengate, I stopped concentrating on [their]
disabilities and all my thoughts were concentrated on helping them succeed in
small physical tasks, like putting things away and brushing their teeth, as
well as more comprehensive tasks, such as getting them to communicate their
needs. If it weren't for the experiences offered by this internship, I might
still be searching for what I wanted to do."
- Human Development student working as a pre-school aide at the Greengate School for Exceptional Students.
Anderson Elementary School
"The skills I applied during my internship at Anderson were organization, written and
verbal communication, mentoring and active listening skills. The skills that I
acquired through the internship were how to be an even better listener and the
importance of patience... I am very happy that I took this internship because
it has allowed me to explore my field of interest on a first hand basis... The
involvement with the children at Anderson Elementary School has
definitely made me consider pursuing a career in elementary school
counseling."

Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency
"I have the skills necessary to compete for any job in redevelopment
and city planning. I have become knowledgeable in almost all facets of
redevelopment including: community development block grant, tax increment
funding, budget allocation, contracts law, redevelopment law, community
outreach techniques, commercial revitalization, etc. I have also tuned my
computer skills and learned simple skills like letter writing, memos, faxes,
marketing brochures, presentations, GIS mapping, inputting data, creating
databases, and so on."

Campus Violence Prevention Program
"Part of me knew what I was getting into. Part of me had no idea.... I
never knew about the complexity of sexual assault. I never knew the depth of
sadness I would feel. I never knew that you could be traumatized yourself,
just by hearing someone else's story...I never knew how much I had to learn.
I never knew that I would be so strong."

Local Mental Health Facility
"Pine Tree Gardens is a home for mentally ill
adults. I obtained the title of Activities Director. Responsibilities delegated
to me include motivating clients to achieve goals, assisting in planning and
implementing meals, and beginning to learn medications and how to distribute
them. Yet the most important task is to generate friendships and trusting
relations with the clients. I was constantly required to exercise patience and
attention. I have learned a great deal about psychological diseases and
individual cases. Being a psychology major, this experience has opened my eyes
and given me concrete experience with diseases I had only read about..."

Lee Jr. High School
"I made a positive impact among these young men, and they have made an
unimaginable impact on me... All the students taught me to respect them and talk
to them like adults. They expressed to me that when a substitute teacher comes
in and talks to them like children, they react in a hostile manner. However,
because I did talk to them as I would talk to my friends or professors, they
reacted in a very respectful manner and became my good friends."
