Engineering

Strong mathematical and analytical skills are crucial for success as an engineering student, but students who earn engineering degrees can expect great jobs as one of their rewards. Engineers are among the best paid of our graduating seniors and companies vie with one another to attract students with degrees in computer science and electrical engineering. Experiential learning has always been important in engineering programs and the UC Davis program is no exception. Among the many companies that have provided great learning opportunities for engineering students are BARRA, Davis Energy Group, Caltrans, Delta Diablo Sanitation District, Computer Graphic Solutions, Hewlett Packard, Intel, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Motorola, NASA, Sacramento International Airport, USS Tosco Industries, Walt Disney World, Websoft Developers, and Z-World.

Student Experiences:

Caltrans

"I am an absolute fanatic of bridges and highway interchanges. So when I was hired on as an intern to a Senior Bridge Engineer at Caltrans, I was ecstatic. I was going to get paid to go all over Northern California and look at structures that have thrilled me since I was a little kid. The best part about the whole situation was that I learned so much about bridges. The experience was so good that I am going to continue working at Caltrans during the school year. My summer internship at Caltrans provided me with some much-needed, real-world experience in the civil engineering field."

UCD School of Medicine

"I have worked in the Clinical Pathology laboratory for five academic quarters and two summer sessions. Since I have held an internship in the same laboratory for over a year and a half, I am very knowledgeable in the workings of that lab.. I was fortunate to have been able to follow a research project from beginning to end."

Apple Computer

"The really great thing about this internship is not only does it allow me to apply my coursework to the real world, but it also gives me valuable knowledge that I can use in school as well as in my future in the computer science industry. . Having the opportunity to work for Apple definitely benefits my education as a Computer Science major."

Intel

"I am just beginning to see the "big picture." Currently, I belong to the Design Automation group. During my first couple of weeks working, I had now idea how our group fit into the flow at Intel. I am now starting to see and appreciate how important this group is to the company."
- Electrical Engineering major developing hardware at Intel.

NUMMI

"A reason why I say that NUMMI has been a very valuable educational experience is that I've gained a good understanding of what working as a mechanical engineer is like. I've done many things from data entry to giving presentations to fixing things hands on. I've also been exposed to NUMMI'S company culture. In my six months, I've seen company politics, company goals and objectives, and how to get things done in a large company."
