Political Science and International Relations majors are just a few of the
fields that attract students who want internships in law and politics. Davis
students serve as interns in small and large law firms, prosecutors and
public defenders, political consulting firms, state and federal agencies,
public action groups, and more. Just a few of our sponsors are the offices
of Senator Barbara Boxer and Congressman Doug Ose, the California Attorney
General, the California Department of Justice, Christopher L. Krieger Attorney
at Law, City of Davis, City of Sacramento, City of Woodland, Cooper and Gardener,
the Dolphin Group, International Law Offices of Robert B. Keyser, Law Offices
of Virginia Alonzo Juett, Legal Research Associates, Mexican-American Legal
Defense Fund, Office of the State Treasurer, Sacramento District Attorney,
Voluntary Legal Services of Northern California, William T. Kopper Attorney at
Law, the Yolo County District Attorney and the Yolo County Public Defender. These
internships are great for exploring the realities of law and politics, and will
help you become an informed citizen even if you don't choose a career in law or
politics.
Student Experiences:
Lawyers
"This internship really made me realize that I would like to become a
lawyer some day. I watched Mr. Burton at work and thought I could see myself
doing what he does some time in the near future.. I really like labor law and
would like to get involved in that area. all the cases were very interesting
and very different and still exciting. Mr. Burton always expressed a level of
passion and excitement for his work that made the internship very exciting and
really made me want to do what he does. Overall, I loved the internship. It
gave me a chance to see the legal profession up close, [and] learn many things."

Senator Barbara Boxer
"Through this internship, I was exposed to a variety of political
issues and responsibilities. I learned how to handle constituent inquiries,
and learned how to establish a direct contact with constituents and community
groups. I also gained an overall understanding of the workings of a Senate office
through observing and participating in the political events. . I was constantly
surrounded by political news and information on the electoral races. Overall, this
internship was a great learning experience."

Yolo County District Attorney
"The mission of the
Victim/Witness Program is to provide comprehensive services for the victims and
to fulfill many of the needs they experience after the crime. The goal is to
reduce any trauma experienced from the crime, help the victim/witness through
the criminal proceedings and answer any questions of help them correspond with
the appropriate District Attorney. This internship has proven to be worthwhile
for me. I plan to attend law school in the future and through this internship I
was able to understand how the Criminal Justice System works first hand. It
also let me see the true victims of crime and see that they need assistance and
intervention after the crime has happened. I have always been interested in
criminal law (prosecution) but have not known much about it, but after this
quarter I feel more assured that this is something I would like to do."

Nielsen Merksamer, Parinella Mueller & Naylor.
"One of the main reasons for this internship was to help me decide my
future. I have been fascinated with politics and law since middle school. The
whole political, budget and committee process is an intricate system of rules
and norms. Since I am planning on going to law school in the future, I believe
this experience at Nielsen Merksamer et al. was well worth it. I have come t
enjoy law in the context of politics."

Stonecreek Group
"If you do not have an
appreciation for politics and a general understanding of how things in
government work, the experience may be lost on you. I am not too sure that the
life of a political consultant is for me, but if it had not been for the
internship opportunity, I would not have found that out."

of responsibility."

State Senator Darrel Stein
"In these three months as a legislative field intern, I learned just
what a valuable ally one's respective assembly member can be. I find it very
surprising that few people utilize their assembly member and are clueless as to
the many services he/she is able to render his/her constituency. I also learned
how to analyze legislation, and was able to observe the intricacies of working
with a constituent. I learned the importance of being able to communicate
effectively, as well as the importance of group dynamics."
- Political Science intern in the Office of State Senator Darrell Steinberg.
