Student Experiences:
UCD Medical Group
"My activities included shadowing the doctor, listening to lungs and
hearts, measuring the bellies of pregnant women, looking at cells under the
microscope, getting the histories of patients, testing swabs for strep, and
many other general tasks. My expectations were exceeded. I learned things that
I never thought possible from simply shadowing a doctor."
- Psychology major doing a family practice internship at the UCD Medical Group
Dr. Jeanne Brewer
"While working with Dr. Brewer, we often talked about the future of
dentistry and what I have to look forward to. Talking with her drove me deeper
into my fascination with dentistry as a skill and art, as well as an
occupation. I believe the hands on experience and patient and staff interaction
I have gained interning here will really benefit me in dental school. I feel
like I already have an edge over other dental students just by being familiar
with procedures, feeling comfortable with staff and doctors,
and with patients as well."
- Neurophysiology and Behavior student interning as a dental assistant with Dr. Jeanne Brewer.
UCD School of Veterinary Medicine
"This internship was a great learning experience. I worked with two
other girls on curriculum to teach kids about animal production. I had to use a
lot of creativity in this internship. I had to start thinking about learning in
a completely different way than I had previously. Seeing those kids' eyes light
up when they learned something new was magnificent. .It makes me realize that
if I don't get into veterinary school, like I want to, I can still have a
meaningful and enjoyable career doing something else I love, which is
teaching."
- Biological Sciences student in the Animal Ambassador
Program in the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
UCDMC
"This was, by far, one of the greatest experiences of my life. I have
never up to this point had the opportunity to work in a hospital environment,
or even in any remote field of medicine, I have been working since I was 15. I
have always worked full time, but all my work has been clerical... What a
change of setting! I loved every single minute of it. I love lab work, and this
was by far the most interesting lab I have every seen. The methods are at the
same time both simple and ingenious, I was blown away."
- Neurophysiology and Behavior student assisting in the operating room at UCDMC.
"After my fourth quarter
interning at UCDMC, I gained more knowledge and understanding. I built
excellent relationships with everyone I worked with and because of this
relationship, I learned about procedures and different types of treatment in
another field of medicine. I can apply everything I learned with my future
plans in becoming a doctor. Every time I go to the clinic, I get more determined
to go to medical school."
- Human Development major serving as an OB/GYN Intern at UCDMC.
"Emergency medicine is
definitely an area that I want to go into. Whether I go into it as an ER
doctor, a paramedic in the fire department or just as a straight paramedic,
this is what I want to do. My internship at ER just helped to strengthen this
dream. I know that one of the key reasons that I passed my EMT class and become
certified was through the working knowledge that I gained in the ER."
- Neurophysiology and Behavior student working as an emergency room physician aid at UCDMC
"I would definitely recommend this internship to other students who are
interested in neonatal nursing, medicine, or infant massage therapy. Not only
will it help me in my career as a Pediatric or Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, but
also in raising my own children in the future. This field placement increased
my sensitivity to babies' needs as well as teaching me how important nurturing
care is to optimal development, especially in premature babies how are growing
in an artificial environment-the hospital."
- A Neurophysiology and Behavior Major working as an infant massage intern at the UCDMC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
