Connecting the Community with the Elderly

Description: Do you enjoy singing, dancing or playing music? Nursing homes, retirement centers, and senior day cares in Davis are looking for volunteers to improve the lives of the elderly and increase interaction with the community through the arts. Whether you are an individual or a group looking for one-time or regular community service, this is an excellent opportunity to bring joy to the lives of the elderly and to perform for a grateful audience. A perfect volunteer opportunity for those with busy schedules, as dates and times are very flexible.

Prop 29 Phone Bank

Description: Did you know that Prop. 29 has the ability to save nearly 105,000 lives? Think about how many people suffer from heart disease, lung disease and cancer-related deaths. The tobacco companies have launched a full attack on the validity of Prop. 29.  We need your help more than ever! There's a phone bank in Sacramento on Tuesday night. We'll be calling voters statewide to talk with them about Prop. 29. Each phone call strengthens our chance to win this campaign on June 5th.

American Heart Association

Description: Health Fairs reach people at all levels of the community including children and their teachers, working professionals, patients and doctors. We are looking for volunteers with a positive attitude to go out into the community and represent AHA.  Health fair representatives will pass out literature and promote AHA events.

Southside Park Adopt-a-Park Day

Description: Join neighbors and friends for a day of service and cleaning at Southside Park! Please wear close toed shoes; bring gloves and wear sunscreen and a hat.

Coloma Community Center Clean-Up

Movie Screening and Champagne Brunch/Silent Auction

Description: Looking for volunteers to help with set-up and miscellaneous tasks during this event which is hosted by FORCE: Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered.  FORCE is the only national nonprofit dedicated to awareness, advocacy, research and support for those affected by hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.

National Foster Care Month

Description: Looking for volunteers to help out Our Children Keeper’s “Family Vision Board Building 101” in honor of National Foster Care Month. Vision boards are an awesome way for people to plan for their futures. Vision boards are white boards with cut outs, crafts, pictures and much more. Volunteers will assist with the workshops held in Sacramento Public Libraries.

BeerFest: Fundraiser for Citizens Who Care for the Elderly

Description: Looking for student volunteers who are 21 or older, since the venue is at Sudwerks..  Student volunteers will be needed for: (1) set up from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm as well as for assisting at the event (2:00 - 5:00 pm). Volunteers will be provided with complimentary food and beverage and our heartfelt appreciation!

Harper Junior High Community Garden

Description: In need of volunteers to help lay the irrigation for a new community garden.  After installing irrigation, volunteers will backfill the trenches.  We will begin at 8 am to avoid the heat. Please meet at the bike racks.

The ALS Association

Description: The ALS Association is a non-profit organization reaching out to over 300 patients in the Greater Sacramento Area who are fighting ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. Looking for volunteers for the 25th Anniversary Summer Soiree celebration to help with setup, cleanup, silent auction, live auction, raffle, and food serving.

Ethel Hart Senior Center presents Farm Stand

Description: The Ethel Hart Senior Center and the Midtown Business Association are collaborating to present the second annual summer Farm Stand in Marshall Park. Farm Stand in Marshall Park is operated almost exclusively through the efforts of volunteers.  Last year, volunteers enjoyed interacting with the cheerful Senior Center participants and customers from the neighborhood who were delighted to conveniently buy delicious fruits and vegetables. Many volunteer positions available:

Marketing committee chair and committee members
Chair plus 2 – 3 volunteers.

The marketing committee will publicize the farm stand throughout the community.  This includes communication with Senior Center users, neighborhood associations, neighboring residents and businesses, and others such as Sutter Hospital, medical officers, nearby senior facilities, and the media.  Work will begin in March, or as soon as possible, and continue throughout the summer as appropriate.

Morning set-up team:  8:30 – 10:00 a.m.
Team captain plus 2 assistants

The captain and assistants will transform a portion of Marshall Park into an attractive farm stand.  This includes setting up the pop-up tent and six-foot tables; arranging produce in baskets and preparing price signs.  Some volunteers will lift boxes of produce weighing up to approximately 20 pounds.

Sales team:  Shift 1: 10:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
4 volunteers, plus cashier
Shift 2:  Noon – 2:15 p.m. - 2 volunteers, plus cashier
On-call substitutes - 3 – 4 volunteers

Sales team volunteers will assist customers with selecting and purchasing produce.  Volunteers will weigh produce and calculate the total cost for the customer.  During Shift 1, volunteers will also make sales inside the Senior Center, such as taking orders from Center participants or setting up a small display of produce within the Center.    At the end of Shift 2, volunteers will help with take-down, including cataloging the unsold produce, preparing left-over produce for transport to the River City Food Bank, disassembling Farm Stand and moving equipment and supplies back into the Senior Center.

Data gatherer: 2 hours during each of the farm stand days.
Exact time will vary weekly.

The data gatherer will observe the operation, count customers, categorize customers by time of purchase, age and by whether they are Senior Center participants, neighbors, and any other criteria to be determined.

When and where: Marshall Park (27th and J street in Sacramento) each Wednesday during June, July and August 2012.

Sacramento Boat Fest

Description: The Sacramento Marina and Entercom Radio Group bring the first annual Sacramento Boat Fest to Miller Park.  Volunteers are needed (preferably groups of 10-20) to assist in trash pick-up during and after event as well as parking attendants and traffic control.  Food vouchers and water for each registered volunteer. 

When and where: June 30th, Times needed for trash pick-up are from 12pm – 7pm.  Times needed for traffic/parking to be determined.  Schedules/time slots can be arranged ahead of time.

Muscular Dystrophy Association Camp

Description: Volunteer to be a camp counselor for MDA Camp! MDA camp is a magical place offering activities specially designed for young people who have limited mobility. As a volunteer counselor, you will be assisting individuals with neuromuscular disorders in their daily activities. This may include pushing their wheelchairs or helping a camper with walking, eating, toileting, bathing and dressing. The campers who will be attending this session are both male and female and range in age from 6-17 years old. Their degrees of ability vary. Not all of them use wheelchairs; some are able to walk, but may need assistance.  

When and where: The camp will be at Grizzly Creek Ranch from July 23rd-July 28th.

Feather Falls Run

Front Street Animal Shelter

Description: The shelter goals include placing animals in loving, permanent homes, ending animal abuse/cruelty and assisting the public with animal care and pet health issues. Just a few of the ways that shelter volunteers make this possible include: maintaining a very clean and sanitary environment, conducting health and behavior screenings, exercising and socializing animals, cleaning and sanitizing bedding, bowls and other animal care items, participating in community outreach and fundraising events, maintaining databases, making phone calls and scheduling appointments, and sorting food donations for the Sacramento Pet Food Bank.

Description: Are you interested in helping the medically underserved in the Sacramento area?  If so, Clinica Tepati is definitely for you! Since 1974, Clinica Tepati has been a non-profit, student-run clinic that provides free primary health care services to the uninsured population of Sacramento and the surrounding area. *California Department of Fish and Game/National Park Service

Description: Seeking applicants eager to volunteer this summer on CDFG/NPS studies of climate change on the American Pika. Work will involve a combination of backpacking and day hikes. Must be able to hike long distances cross-country to remote habitat. Training in survey protocols, transportation and meal expenses will be provided. Volunteers must be able to work 10 hours/day.

When and where:  Surveys will be conducted between June 1 and October 30. Brief 2-5 days volunteerships are also available. Fieldwork locations will include Yosemite and the northern Sierra Nevada.

*Child Family Health International

Description: CFHI is still accepting applications for the summer programs! Programs are located in various locations including Ecuador, India and South Africa! CFHI participants go on 1 to 4 month internship-style programs alongside local physicians in underserved communities. Participants rotate through clinics and hospitals, take language classes, attend weekly lectures, and become immersed in the local healthcare system.

Changing Lives Together

Description: Changing Lives Together has both a long term and short term plan that addresses educational and medical deficiencies in a region in Ghana. In 2011 the mission to build a school house was completed. The 2012 mission is to send up to 9 surgeons to Ghana and perform surgery for about 8 – 10 hours/day over a 3 week period in August.

We are looking for volunteers to help with the 2012 mission. Volunteers are needed to edit websites, deliver posters in Sacramento & vicinity, help network recruit surgeons, assist surgeons with paperwork and set up appointments for sponsors.

Society for the Blind

Description: Society for the Blind is looking for voluteers - ongoing, unpaid to work one of the following days (Tuesday or Thursdays weekly). Individual must be sighted, computer skills, able to work with Seniors and low vision of blind clients in our Aids to Independence Store.
Hours: 9am - 4pm (Lunch: 12-1pm)
Individuals may do tihs to get their community service hours also. Open to one person doing both days for several individuals.

Citizen Who Care

Citizens Who Care is looking for a confident, sensitive, caring volunteer who would be willing to take one of our Davis clients for a drive or outing. She is a 96 year old lady with Alzheimer’s disease that has advanced to the stage where it is difficult to engage her. This woman is pleasant and sociable, she loves to go on short outings but there is no doubt that being with her requires a good deal of patience and understanding.

Someone with experience working with someone with Alzheimer’s disease, or with special needs would be a good candidate for this position. In addition, if you are a pre med, nursing or psychology student with an interest in the elderly or dementia care this assignment would provide some useful insights for you.

Suicide Prevention of Yolo County

Description: You can play a role in saving the lives of Yolo County residents.  Join the dedicated volunteers who answer our phones – the first point of human contact in the steps toward mental health. Volunteers undergo a 36-hour training program in which they develop the skills needed to manage issues of depression, suicide, family relationship conflicts and mental illness.  Your voice and your ear are more valuable than you can imagine. Transcript Notation and credits are available.

When and where: Upcoming training dates are: April 19, 21, 22, 24, 26, May 1, 3, 8, 10, and 17. Interested volunteers must be able to make to all training dates. Trainings will be held in Davis. Volunteers will serve six hours per week and donate a one-year service commitment upon successful completion of the training program. Farmer's Market at Silo

Description: Interested in sustainability? Love the Davis Farmer’s Market? This spring, the Farmers’ Market is coming to the Silo and is looking for volunteers to manage the weekly zero waste event. Volunteers will be treated to a free lunch and will have the opportunity to learn about waste diversion on the UC Davis campus.

Village Harvest

Description: Village Harvest is an organization that picks fruit from backyard trees in Davis and Woodland and donates it to local food agencies to feed the hungry in Yolo County. Looking for volunteers to help with picking, sorting and transporting fruit; no experience is necessary.

When and where:  Typically, Tuesdays and Weekends. Volunteers meet at central locations in Davis and Woodland and carpool/bike to nearby sites. Check the calendar for exact dates and times on the website.

After-School Reading Club

Description: Can you give ½ hour, once a week to read with a beginning reader? The purpose of the program is to give Second and Third Graders some extra reading practice after school.  The UCD volunteer sits with one student and listens to him/her read, then discusses the book. There is no application process.

When and where:  Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 2:35 to 3:05 pm at the North Davis Elementary School.

*UC Davis VIDA Pre-Veterinary Group

Description: Volunteer abroad at Costa Rica and Nicaragua to gain unique, hands-on, veterinary experience at low-cost spay/neuter clinics & visiting farms to treat livestock. Provide hands on assistance to vets during surgeries, treat companion, livestock, and exotic animals! The total cost for the trip is $2140, which includes lodging, any fees for tourist sites, transportation & most meals.

When and where: June 16th – July 2nd. Volunteer positions are open to all undergraduate/graduate students, or recent graduates and there are currently 10 spots available. A minimum of 25 surgical observation hours are required before departure (not to enroll) & proficiency in Spanish speaking is not necessary.

Description: The Yolo Superior Court offers unpaid internship opportunities for college level students interested in court operations. Duties will vary depending on assignment but will generally involve clerical and support work in the assigned unit. Prospective interns will be required to pass a California DOJ background check and a drug screen before starting the internship at Yolo Superior Court. Light lifting may be required. A valid California Drivers License may be required.

Sunshine Ordinances (Dixon Open Government)

Description: The Sunshine Ordinance is the Dixon Open Government Initiative which will allow local citizens more access to local government. The initiative will reinforce the Brown Act. Student volunteers are needed to collect signatures from registered Dixon voters during the first two weeks of May. The first weekend students will canvass Dixon neighborhoods and the second weekend volunteers are needed to staff a table outside of the May Fair.

*Do An Event: Summer Planning Intern

Description: Do An Event offers college seniors an opportunity to experience and learn the Event Planning industry as well as a tutorial on entrepreneurship. Office hours are unpaid. On-site event hours are paid at $10 per hour.

Description: Seeking a student to work this summer as a Biological Science Technician (Soils) GS-0404-4 at the Klamath National Forest, Headquarters Office in Yreka, California. The position conducts soil disturbance monitoring of proposed and recent timber sale units using established protocols. CETA Foundation

Description:  CETA Foundation is an all-volunteer non-profit that provides ranch tours & visits, animal assisted learning & therapy, animal care & training lessons, pet laying hens, and adoption of rescued animals. Looking for interns to work alongside a veterinarian and help clean pens, groom/feed animals, and help handle animals to socialize them. Interns will learn how to handle and work with a wide range of animals in flock and herd settings (horses, dogs, pigs, sheep, parrots, chickens, etc.). There will be opportunities for clinical work (assisting with surgeries) and community work (assisting with petting zoos & pony rides). Transcript notation and credits are available.

Description:  Looking for a Youth Marketing and Communications Research Intern. The majority of the internship will be focused on conducting extensive research in youth marketing strategies and ways in which non-profits engage youth. Projected start date is June 2012.

*China California Heart Watch

Description:   Pre-med? Interested in public health? Want hands-on experience helping run rural clinics in China? The China California Heart Watch is a 501(c)3 public charity whose mission includes medical research, teaching and clinical care in rural Yunnan Province, China.

International Medical and Public Health Opportunity – China Cal will be hosting an international internship program where students will assist in a screening and treatment of high blood pressure and heart disease program for adults and school children living in rural townships. Participants will travel and work with faculty from Kunming and Dali Universities, as well as Dr. Robert Detrano, Professor of Medicine/Cardiology at the University of California, Irvine

Opening Doors

Description: Opening Doors’ mission is to empower refugees, immigrants, human trafficking survivors, and underserved Sacramento area residents to achieve self-sufficiency by accessing opportunities to mainstream economic and social systems.

Internships available:
Survivors of Human Trafficking Outreach: (Currently looking for two interns: one that requires fluency in English and Spanish but the other has no language requirement)

The Interns of the SOT program reports to the Director and Program Associate. They have responsibilities of assisting in coordinating and meeting outreach goals, and acting as support case managers for designated clients enrolled. The Interns of the SOT program are responsible to understand program objectives and continuously review their program activities to ensure they are focused on achievement of stated goals. The SOT Interns are responsible to implement the policy directives emanating from the Director and, if appointed, to assume the leadership role in guiding the project designated to them within the SOT program.

The SOT Interns are responsible for the following specific areas of the program: Activity Planning, Development, and Evaluation, Fiscal , Reports, Confidential Reports, Other Duties as Assigned

A. Activity Planning, Development, and Evaluation It is the SOT Interns’ responsibility to plan and develop activities as assigned by the Director or Program associated as funded by the funding agencies and approved by the Board of Directors and ED.

The main planning, development, and evaluation functions include:
1. Public relations: a) participating in community events tabling and b) providing trainings to student groups
2. Researching and applying for appropriate public and private funding sources, including the State of California, the Federal agencies concerned with survivors of trafficking services, and other social service agencies.
3. Assisting in the development and implementation of evaluations of the program goals and objectives.
4. Developing goals and objectives for consideration by the Director and Executive Director.
5. Providing the Director with updated activity changes

PROGRAM SPECIFIC: Outreach - Assists in coordination, and organizes VOT/SOT outreach and trainings with social service agencies and interested parties in Sacramento and surrounding counties outlined in funding sources’ contracts - Participates in and presents at trainings to student groups and events.

PROGRAM SPECIFIC: Case Management - Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls from victims of human trafficking if either assigned by Director if intern has the language capacity of victim - Provides translation for initial screening for clients for enrollment into the case management program; - Effectively supports existing relationships with referral organizations and agencies throughout the anti-trafficking and related fields - Assists clients of ODI in all capacities outlined in the Program Manuel as requested by case managers.

B. Fiscal Management The SOT Interns shall assist, advise, and submit for approval to the Director the following: Completion of Request for Payments for individual clients on a monthly bases.

C. Confidential Records and Files All records, reports, and other materials relating to survivors of trafficking shall be kept in a locked file under the direction of the ED, SOT Director and the program associates. The confidentiality of such records shall be maintained except as necessary for the conduct of business in a client’s interest and as may be required by funding agencies.

E. Reports The SOT Interns are responsible as assigned by the Director for all reports required by funding sources, the Executive Director, the Bookkeeper or the Board of Directors. Such reports include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Program Reports to the Board of Directors.
2. Monthly program reports for all funding sources.
3. Copies of all inspection and evaluation reports funding agencies.

G. Other Duties as Assigned The SOT Interns shall perform other duties as prescribed by the Executive Director, Director or the Board of Directors.

MoneyWork$ Program
MoneyWork$ is an intensive six-month “financial makeover” program through which families gain a greater understanding of their current financial situation, improve their financial management practices and develop a personal roadmap to self-sufficiency. The program increases participants’ understanding of the US financial system and ultimately aims at helping them achieve the behavioral change they have determined is needed to get out of debt, retain more of their assets and achieve their financial goals. Besides weekly class sessions, participants engage in support group meetings and receive one-on-one financial counseling. The program is provided in English and in Spanish.

MoneyWork$ interns have a wide range of responsibilities including:

  • Assist staff in reaching out to the target communities with information about MoneyWork$.
  • Help to create or modify printed and website materials. Attend outreach events with staff.  Make follow-up telephone calls.
  • Assist staff with curriculum adjustments or modifications.
  • Assist staff in preparing for, then setting up for and carrying out evening classes. 
  • Take detailed notes at class sessions and type up those notes to provide to participants who issued the session.
  • Review and evaluate participant homework assignments.  Provide feedback and record scores.
  • Maintain records of class and support group participation, coaching sessions, and participant milestones reached.
  • Perform research as needed into topics such as new credit card legislation or retirement savings plans.
  • Take a primary role in planning and executing events including program graduation ceremony. 

Special Internship: Community Health Research Intern
The Iraqi Health Needs Assessment is a collaborative, community-based research project being performed by Opening Doors in partnership with the UC Davis Clinical and Translational Science Center and the Iraqi community’s Mesopotamia Association. We seek an enthusiastic and detail-oriented upper division undergraduate or graduate student for a special internship to support this project.

Davis Farm to School

Description: Taste Tester Intern needed to conduct taste tests at the Davis Elementary Schools during lunchtime. Volunteers greet students in line for school lunch and offer taste testings before students get their food, as well as offer taste testings to students who bring their lunch from home. Tasters promote school lunch in a positive manner and offer nutritional information about the taste tastings to students as they do so. Credit and internship notation are available.

Free Screening of Jubanos: The Jews of Cuba
