American Heart Association

Description: Looking for volunteers to drop by legislator offices to distribute Capitol Goes Red materials.

Discovery Day

Description: Looking for volunteers to interact with elementary students of Tafoya Elementary School. Help them during the clay workshops, dreamcatcher weaving and setting up/cleaning the event. Snacks and refreshments are provided.

Pilipin@ Youth Conference

Description: Pilipin@ Youth Conference is a three day event where BRIDGE: Pilipin@ Outreach and Retention invites about 100 high school students from Northern California to learn about Pilipin@ American history, cultural awareness, and different paths of higher education. Looking for individuals to be Counselors, Workshop Facilitators and Volunteers. You do not have to be Pilipin@ to participate!

Description: Looking for volunteers to help as bartenders, servers and clean up crew for a fundraising auction. About 6 more are needed for cleaning up.

Cash For College

Description: Volunteers needed for the Cash For College Workshops 2012 hosted by Assemblymember Mariko Yamada. Help high school seniors and their families with completing their FAFSA information. Spanish and Slavic speaking volunteers are especially needed.

AJD Angels of Hope

Description: Volunteers needed for the Winter Children’s Faire to help with clean up, set up and entertainment. Event will also be part of this Winter’s Weekend of Service. Organizations, student groups and fraternities/sororities are encouraged to help out. Also, be sure to look out for our fundraising event, the Rose Gram!

Fleet Feet of Sacramento

Description: Need volunteers to help with a half marathon ~Shamrock N Run. Volunteers can choose to work at the Fluid stations, the starting line or the finish line.

When and where: March 11 at Raley Field in Sacramento. Time differs depends on volunteers: Fluid stations (6:45 am – 1:00 pm), Starting line (5:30 – 11:00 am), Race Day packet pick-up (6 – 9:30 am), Water and metal distribution/finish line (7 am – 1:00 pm) and Finish line tear down and clean up (1 – 2:30 pm).

AJD Angels of Hope Foundation

Description: Four available positions:

Marketing and Outreach Coordinators – Looking for two students to approach local businesses for sponsorship of AJD Angels of Hope philanthropic mission and for sponsorship of shipping cost of care packages to the Philippines, dental and medical mission, scholarship and child sponsorship.

Membership Coordinators – Looking for two students to approach individuals and local businesses for membership of AJD Angels of Hope philanthropy program.  

Website or IT Development – Looking for one or two students with computer or programming background who can update the AJD Angels of Hope ecommerce website,  knowledgeable of spreadsheet to convert Spreadsheet Data to CSV format and export to database.

Community Coordinator – Looking for four students to table in pairs at Farmer’s Market to represent AJD Angels of Hope and sell crafts for fundraising.

Waste Reduction & Recycling Program 

Description: Looking for volunteers to help WRR staff prepare for the 12th annual RecycleMania competition. Recyclemania is an eight-week nationwide competition among colleges and universities to see which school reigns supreme in regards to reducing, reusing, and recycling their waste. Volunteers will be needed to assist WRR staff with advertising, tabling, and other various activities.

Village Harvest

Description: Village Harvest is an organization that picks fruit from backyard trees in Davis and Woodland and donates it to local food agencies to feed the hungry in Yolo County. Looking for volunteers to help with picking, sorting and transporting fruit; no experience is necessary.

When and where:  Typically, Tuesdays and Weekends. Volunteers meet at central locations in Davis and Woodland and carpool/bike to nearby sites. Check the calendar for exact dates and times on the website.

After-School Reading Club

Description: Can you give ½ hour, once a week to read with a beginning reader? The purpose of the program is to give Second and Third Graders some extra reading practice after school.  The UCD volunteer sits with one student and listens to him/her read, then discusses the book. There is no application process.

When and where:  Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 2:35 to 3:05 pm at the North Davis Elementary School.

California Against Slavery

Description: Looking for volunteers to collect signatures on a petition to get the CASE initiative on the November Ballot. The CASE initiative is an effort to strengthen laws against human trafficking in California.

Dixon Teen Center

Description: Volunteers needed to assist supervisors at the Dixon Teen Center. Engage teens in games and activities, work in the snack bar, supervise the computer lab and oversees safety at the DTC. LiveScan fingerprinting and background check required.

Sacramento Suzuki Violin Studio

Description: Non-profit music institute seeking volunteers for October to assist with music instrument preparation: polishing instruments, tuning, labeling, cleaning instrument cases to prepare for the district-wide Any Given Child Program next month. No experience needed.

Relationship Skills Center

Description: In need of bilingual, Spanish speaking students to serve as coaches for relationship classes. Training is provided. Commitment is either 3 Saturdays in one month or 6 consecutive weeknights. Anyone interested should be available Saturdays, weeknights, or both.

Access Leisure Sports

Description: Two leisure/sport volunteering opportunities:
Quad Rugby – This sport was developed for individuals who have all four limbs of the body affected by their disability. Volunteers assist staff with set up, clean up, and during practice by chasing balls and setting up drills. Runs through January 2012.

Sled Hockey - Sled Hockey is a fun and exciting sport for youth and adults with physical disabilities or no disabilities. Volunteers are needed through February 2012 to help with set up, assist new participants and move pads on the ice.

Davis Community Meals

Description: Recruiting volunteers to help cold weather shelter providing accommodation to 10 homeless individuals. Training provided.

When and where:  November 15 - March 31. Shelter opens at 6pm. From 6 to 11 pm, there are three volunteers on site. From 11 pm to 8 am, there are two volunteers on site.

Description: Submit an abstract for the Undergraduate Research Conference! The conference is designed to acquaint undergraduates with the process and academic rigors of presenting research in a scholarly manner. Research projects must have been conducted under the supervision of a faculty member or professional in the field.

Sacramento CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Training

Description: Classes are taught by instructors from the Fire Department and CERT members who have been trained as instructors. The basic course covers 1) Introduction to Disaster Awareness; 2) Fire Safety Techniques; 3) Disaster Medical (2 weeks); 4) Light Search and Rescue Operations; 5) Team Organization and Management 6) Terrorism. The final review is a drill which teams up the class into groups and goes through a disaster drill. Training is provided for free.

Capital Fellows Program

Description: The Capital Fellows Programs are administered by the Center for California Studies at California State University, Sacramento and are an outstanding opportunity for college graduates to engage in public service and prepare for future careers. Fellows work 10-11 months as full-time staff members in the California State Assembly, California State Senate, California Executive Branch or the California Judiciary. They participate in policymaking, program development and implementation.

When and where: Prospective Capital Fellows must have a bachelor’s degree (in any major) and a demonstrated interest in state government and public service. Individuals must complete the online application by the deadline of: February 22, 2012.

American Lung Association

Description: The American Lung Association, Sacramento Chapter will be hosting it's third annual Fight for Air Climb, which is a "vertical road race" where teams and individuals run/walk the stairways of the Wells Fargo Center in Downtown Sacramento.   The "climb" is a symbolic event about overcoming challenges, honoring those facing lung disease, and celebrating a healthy life style.  Join the fight!

Hillel’s 2012 Spring Break Trip

Description: Spend your 2012 spring break at an organic farm in Rainbow, CA with the Jewish Farm School. Participants will literally get their hands dirty as they learn about sustainable agriculture, food preservation and preparation, as well as explore food as a social justice issue and learn about Jewish agricultural and environmental laws.  Cost is $375 (includes food, accommodations, and program for 7 days) + Travel.  $100 stipend available with full participation in the program, including implementing a service project or program on campus after the trip.
