Descriptions: The Acorn Mentoring Project is an action/reflection community service project run by CA House that connects UC Davis students with young people ages 5-15 in under-resourced neighborhoods of Sacramento for mentoring relationships through an after-school program on Tuesday afternoons. The Project involves weekly Tuesday mentoring sessions (leaving CA House at 3:10 p.m. and returning at 6:00 p.m.) and six Thursday reflection and planning seminars (at CA House from 3:10-4:30 p.m.). All student mentors must attend all Tuesday and Thursday meetings, but they may choose to participate in the Project purely as community service or for academic credit as well. The Project is considered a group independent study project through the UCD Human and Community Development Department, and academic credit is conferred on the basis of satisfactorily completing a writing component. While the Project is motivated by CA House’s spiritual and ethical commitment to improving human lives and society through community service and social justice work, the Project is non-sectarian and its content is not faith-centered. Typical Tuesday mentoring sessions involve: set-up, ice breakers, an opening circle meeting, a snack and conversation time, a values-based thematic craft, activity, or game, sports, time assisting the young people with homework, a closing circle, and cleanup. Typical Thursday seminars involve reflection on the recent mentoring visit(s), a presentation on a relevant topic or an issue related to mentoring, and planning time for the next mentoring session(s). In addition, the mentors plan one field trip or other event for the young people each quarter. CA House is an inclusive, progressive campus ministry organization located at 433 Russell Blvd. at the intersection of Russell and California Ave. Keywords: Counseling, Education, Mentor/Tutor, Youth

Descriptions: Administered by the City of Davis Parks & Recreation Department since 1987, the Davis Community Mediation Service has provided a free, confidential service to Davis parties with dispute, offering an alternative to the often difficult, costly, and painful traditional legal routes. Disputes which are not legal in nature can also be resolved. Participation is voluntary and are records are strictly confidential. The Service provides a forum for peaceful resolution of conflicts involving problems between tenants and landlords, customers and merchants, neighbors, friends, roommates, and other interpersonal relationships, before they result in court action or escalate into acts of violence. All parties involved with the conflict meet with a panel of two or three trained mediators where each party has the opportunity to air his/her grievance. No police reports or legal records are made or kept during the meeting(s). All mediation is conducted in an informal setting, and the panel does not decide who is right or wrong, but assists the parties involved to find their own solution. Meetings usually occur ten days after an initial call regarding the conflict. The resulting agreement can be legally binding or not, depending upon the participants' wishes. The Service also provides information and referral assistance in cases of discrimination in housing and employment. Volunteer mediators are trained and currently the Service operates with a mostly volunteer staff of 25 mediators. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer may attend the 32-hour training session. Information packets are mailed upon request. Keywords: Counseling

Descriptions: The House is a confidential peer counseling center, offering free services to UCD students. We provide a variety of services including drop in or telephone counseling, support groups and wellness workshops. The program is staffed by trained student volunteers, directed by professional counselors and falls under the UCD Counseling Center's umbrella. All volunteers are first required to participate in a full quarter of extensive training. Once students successfully complete training, they provide counseling and facilitate wellness programs for student groups for at least three quarters. The House's core training program emphasizes the development of basic communication and counseling skills, knowledge of campus and community referral resources and personal growth. Additionally, training addresses fundamental program development and program presentation skills. All House peers are required to successfully complete this training in order to be eligible to counsel. Following formal training, students may choose to participate in Facilitator Training. It emphasizes the development of group counseling skills, and once completed, peers may participate in training new peer counselors or facilitating support groups. Finally, peer counselors can become involved in organizational and administrative aspects of the program by applying for one of the student coordinator positions. All of these positions are volunteer and academic credit and/or transcript notation are available to most students. Selection of volunteers is based upon a person's genuine interest in and ability to help others. Each spring, The House advertises for student volunteers who are willing to contract to a four (consecutive) quarter commitment to The House. The first quarter is spent in training and the remaining three quarters are dedicated to applying the skills acquired in training to peer counseling responsibilities. Applications for student volunteers are accepted by The House following RSVP each quarter.
