The Project involves weekly Tuesday mentoring sessions (leaving CA House at 3:10 p.m. and returning at 6:00 p.m.) and six Thursday reflection and planning seminars (at CA House from 3:10-4:30 p.m.). All student mentors must attend all Tuesday and Thursday meetings, but they may choose to participate in the Project purely as community service or for academic credit as well. While the Project is motivated by CA House’s spiritual and ethical commitment to improving human lives and society through community service and social justice work, the Project is non-sectarian and its content is not faith-centered. Typical Tuesday mentoring sessions involve: set-up, ice breakers, an opening circle meeting, a snack and conversation time, a values-based thematic craft, activity, or game, sports, time assisting the young people with homework, a closing circle, and cleanup. Typical Thursday seminars involve reflection on the recent mentoring visit(s), a presentation on a relevant topic or an issue related to mentoring, and planning time for the next mentoring session(s). It is an inspiring opportunity to gain fresh insights into the problems facing public education and to step up to the point of change to help make our schools work. The Week focuses attention on the strength and impact of a wide range of business / education partnerships, recognizes successful adopt-a-school programs and other efforts, and encourages commitments from previously uninvolved business and community leaders to get involved in the success of our students. When a volunteer spends time in a principal's office or a classroom, he or she is helping our young people recognize that there is something real about what they are learning. In addition, the volunteer obtains a fresh perspective into the problems and achievements of our educational system. The involvement of business in education is based upon the philosophy that the schools are preparing a work force; businesses have an investment in the future of their communities. The best place to make an investment, for both the bottom line and the community, is to help prepare young people for the work force of tomorrow. Descriptions: Founded in 1946, Freedom from Hunger develops innovative and sustainable solutions to help end chronic hunger in the developing world. Our self-help programs serve families on the margin of survival-providing them with the resources they need to break free from a legacy of grinding poverty and chronic hunger. In 1989, Freedom from Hunger created Credit with Education, a powerful combination of microcredit and educational services for women who live on $1/day or less. Women with no collateral, no credit history and limited entrepreneurial experience participate in Credit with Education in self-managed groups of 20 to 40. The groups bear joint responsibility for the loans they receive and provide moral support to their members. As women gather each week to repay their loans, they learn about practical and high-impact health and nutrition practice. Informal discussions on health and nutrition topics are facilitated in local languages by country nationals. Lessons include breastfeeding, immunization, hygiene and diarrhea management, HIV/AIDS prevention, child nutrition and pre-conception family planning. Women also learn how to improve their businesses to earn more money. Widely recognized for its success in cost-effectively integrating both credit and education, Freedom from Hunger has also demonstrated statistically significant impact on mothers' economic status and empowerment and on their children's health and nutrition. Descriptions: The Goal is to Educate and Teach Reading, Exercise, Activity, and Diet to Youth GET READY is a mobile outreach program that provides nutrition education, promotes physical activity and encourages literacy among Yolo County communities with limited resources or access to health information. Through the mobile outreach program, parents of children ages 0-8 are motivated to encourage their families to read and lead a healthier lifestyle. Studies show that eating healthy and increasing daily physical activity has a significant impact on the ability to learn and change behavior patterns. Energy is increased, comprehension is enhanced and attitudes can be changed. The Get Ready program presents the opportunity to bring together school, home and community to promote a common goal of a healthier lifestyle. Get Ready utilizes a USDA approved curriculum entitled Harvest of the Month as its primary teaching model. Harvest of the Month emphasizes increasing access to fruits and vegetables, preference for selected produce items through taste-testing and cooking demonstrations, participation in daily physical activity and increasing understanding of why it is an important component to a healthy lifestyle, and knowledge of and familiarity with California grown fruits and vegetables. On a typical site visit, the GET READY educators combine the Harvest of the Month curriculum with literacy activities: ¨ Educators and children together read a short story about the month’s fruit or vegetable. ¨ Each child receives a book to keep and read at home with his or her parents. ¨ Children participate in nutrition-oriented activities or receive an activity to take home. ¨ Parents receive nutrition education and enjoy cooking demonstrations and taste testing opportunities. ¨ In partnership with the Yolo County Food Bank, parents receive a “Food-2-Learn” bag that includes a nutritious recipe and a few key ingredients to jump-start the shift toward healthier eating habits. The Get Ready program is offered throughout Yolo County, including sites in Woodland, Davis, Winters, Knights Landing and West Sacramento. It emphasizes the development of group counseling skills, and once completed, peers may participate in training new peer counselors or facilitating support groups. Finally, peer counselors can become involved in organizational and administrative aspects of the program by applying for one of the student coordinator positions. All of these positions are volunteer and academic credit and/or transcript notation are available to most students. Selection of volunteers is based upon a person's genuine interest in and ability to help others. Each spring, The House advertises for student volunteers who are willing to contract to a four (consecutive) quarter commitment to The House.
