Descriptions: The American Cancer Society is dedicated to conquering cancer and minimizing the burden of those who currently have cancer. The Society employs a three-level approach to meeting these goals: -support cancer research; -conduct education programs for early detection and prevention of cancer; and -provide services and rehabilitation programs to cancer patients and their families, including tangible items as well as counseling through support group functions. There are two support groups in Yolo County. For information on the Sacramento Branch, contact them at 350 Alhambra Boulevard, Sacramento, 95816. Their phone number is 446-7933. Support programs in Sacramento include: -HOPE: resources for the Crisis of Cancer, offering tools to deal with the educational and emotional aspects of cancer; and -I Can Cope, a series of eight classes with lectures, discussions, and study assignments to help participants regain a sense of self-control. Cancer patients, their families, and close friends are eligible to join these groups. Various volunteer opportunities are available including office assistance, health fairs, smoking cessation and breast self-exam teaching, and other educational seminars. Brown Bag Program: Semi-monthly distribution of free food to low-income seniors at sites throughout the greater Sacramento area. Sacramento Area Community Kitchen: Rescues perishable food from restaurants, supermarkets and farmers' markets for distribution to local emergency shelters serving hot meals. Job training in commercial kitchen skills for unemployed adults. Volunteers rescue usable food that would otherwise be thrown away by grocery stores, restaurants, and other institutions. This food is then given to agencies such as the Salvation Army, Options for Recovery, and Volunteers of America. Volunteers are needed to transport donated food from local markets and restaurants to the Cal Foodlink warehouse in South Sacramento. Weekdays begin at 8:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. Volunteers must have a valid California Driver's License and be able to lift up to 60 pounds. Descriptions: Citizens Who Care serves the elderly and their caregivers in Davis and Woodland with a variety of programs. Volunteers can participate in the following programs: Convalescent Hospital Volunteer: A convalescent hospital volunteer may choose to be matched with a resident whom they visit regularly or they can assist with group activities such as crafts and games. Within this program we have a pet visitation program. Volunteers can bring their well-behaved pet to the facility for regular visits. Volunteers are asked to volunteer for an hour a week. In-Home Respite Volunteer: A volunteer is matched with a client whose caregiver is in need of respite. Volunteers are asked to visit weekly for two hours. Volunteers for this program must be able to commit to a year of service. Time Off for Caregivers: This is a social program that is held at the Davis Senior Center two Saturdays of the month from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers can commit to long-term volunteering, or can choose to volunteer on a limited basis – even once is allowed. Volunteers are assigned to assist clients throughout the program. Staff includes a program director, volunteer coordinator and a health aide for clients in need of hands on assistance. Descriptions: Courtyard Healthcare Center is a skilled nursing facility providing care to 120 elderly, adult handicapped, and retarded citizens. They have an active rehabilitation program and residential living. The Adopt-A-Grandparent program is one in which volunteers adopt a grandparent whom they get to know by visiting regularly. Volunteers are also needed to help with hobbies such as music and art and to participate in field trips. Descriptions: The Elderly Nutrition Program in Yolo County provides hot lunches for senior citizens. Over 400 meals are prepared Monday through Friday for delivery and congregate lunches. Elderly Nutrition offers many volunteer opportunities. Such opportunities include Meals on Wheels Driver, Meals on Wheels Runner, Elderly Nutrition Kitchen Aide, Elderly Nutrition Office Aide, Elderly Nutrition Car Maintenance Aide, and special one-time opportunities. Those interested in driving must have a valid California Driver's License, a clean DMV record, proof of insurance and be at least 21 years of age. Drivers are needed between 10:30 and 12:15, and can commit to once a week, twice a month or act as substitutes. Drivers who work with runners stay in the car and wait for the runners to deliver the food, those on shorter routes may do them without a runner. Kitchen Aides work in the ENP kitchen preparing and packaging food, and keeping the kitchen clean. They also help in the set up of the dining room for the congregate meal by setting places, and dishing food. Kitchen Aides are needed Monday through Friday from 5am to 1pm. Office Aides offer clerical support, specific duties based on skills and abilities. Office volunteers are needed Monday-Friday 8am-3pm at the central office in Woodland. Car Maintenance Aides provide upkeep for the agency's cars. Duties include fueling, washing windows, checking fluid levels, taking them to get washed, oil changes, smog checks and repairs. Car maintenance could be done once a week 1-2 hours. Day and time are flexible. Special Projects include: Holiday gift delivery, handyman opportunities, and possibly any other skills one may have that were not discussed but would be beneficial to the program. There are several internship opportunities available through Elderly Nutrition Program in Yolo County. Descriptions: The Human-Animal Program (HAP) is a non-profit organization which serves to further the appreciation and understanding of our attachment to animals. The program also serves to educate the public on subjects such as pet-facilitated therapy, pet loss and grieving, and the contributions of service animals for people with disabilities. An upper-division interdisciplinary course on the benefits and issues of human-animal interactions is offered in even-numbered years. In addition, the program spearheads data-based studies on subjects such as pets in federal or state housing for the elderly and pets as healers. Human Animal Program also provides pet-loss counseling and has a Pet Loss Crisis Line for pet owners, along with a comprehensive referral and information service for anyone interested in human-animal interaction. Human Animal Program sponsors lectures, and conferences. Pamphlets and newsletters and a bibliography of periodicals on human-animal relationships are available through Human Animal Program. Descriptions: The Yolo Adult Day Health Center provides an alternative to institutional care for frail elders and disabled younger adults whose health problems interfere with independent living. It offers a daytime program of health, rehabilitation, and social services, with transportation to and from home. The Center's goals are to maintain participants' health and independence at the highest possible levels and to provide relief to caregiving families. Specialized services are available for individuals with Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia, and for their caregivers.
