Descriptions: Administered by the City of Davis Parks & Recreation Department since 1987, the Davis Community Mediation Service has provided a free, confidential service to Davis parties with dispute, offering an alternative to the often difficult, costly, and painful traditional legal routes. Disputes which are not legal in nature can also be resolved. Participation is voluntary and are records are strictly confidential. The Service provides a forum for peaceful resolution of conflicts involving problems between tenants and landlords, customers and merchants, neighbors, friends, roommates, and other interpersonal relationships, before they result in court action or escalate into acts of violence. All parties involved with the conflict meet with a panel of two or three trained mediators where each party has the opportunity to air his/her grievance. No police reports or legal records are made or kept during the meeting(s). All mediation is conducted in an informal setting, and the panel does not decide who is right or wrong, but assists the parties involved to find their own solution. Meetings usually occur ten days after an initial call regarding the conflict. The resulting agreement can be legally binding or not, depending upon the participants' wishes. The Service also provides information and referral assistance in cases of discrimination in housing and employment. Volunteer mediators are trained and currently the Service operates with a mostly volunteer staff of 25 mediators. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer may attend the 32-hour training session. Information packets are mailed upon request. Keywords: Counseling

Descriptions: Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization which is active both nationally and internationally, builds homes for low-income families. All of the construction is done by volunteers and most materials are donated. The Sacramento Habitat for Humanity builds 2-4 houses per year and sells them at no profit; their goal is to develop a sense of community, especially among the poorest populations in Sacramento. Eligible families are chosen based on need and level of income. Those families selected to purchase a house must put in 500 "sweat equity" hours, which are hours of labor in building homes. Human Corps has contacted the program and volunteers may work on building sites, helping with construction, painting, landscape and such. Office help (typing, mailing, phoning, etc.), fundraising and public relations are other volunteer options. Call the Habitat office for further information about volunteering, or the application process for a Habitat House. Interested students should also contact UC Davis Student Activities and Leadership to find out more information about the UC Davis Habitat for Humanity student club.
