Descriptions: Adoption Connection is a fully licensed, non-profit adoption agency that has served birth and adoptive families for over 20 years. Descriptions: A national animal advocacy nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization working to alleviate captive animal suffering, rescue individual animals in need, protect wildlife — including highly endangered species — in their natural habitats, and encourage compassionate conservation globally. We also own and operate the 186-acre Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary in Texas, home to more than 500 primates, many of whom were rescued from grim conditions and now reside in a naturally enriched environment with minimal human interference. Descriptions: Honor The Fallen Foundation is a nonprofit, non-partisan organization dedicated to honoring the memory of American service men and women who have died while supporting the war on terrorism both abroad and in the U.S. These brave men and women will be honored by personalized 3’ x 6’ memorial quilt panels created by their families and friends. Each of these panels will be joined together to form an "Honor The Fallen" memorial quilt. The quilt will be displayed on tour throughout the United States to memorialize those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We will also be providing financial assistance to the families left behind when a service member dies. We are currently looking for volunteers interested in helping our foundation and the community at large. We are a very new organization and seek assistance in the following areas: -administrative support; answer phones, process orders, organize and filing, contact clients, general office support. -packaging and shipping; our fundraising efforts involve selling "Honor The Fallen" bracelets. We need help packaging and shipping these. -fundraising committee; we are forming a fundraising committee and need help. Our foundation is starting the first nation-wide quilt memorial display to honor those who have died fighting the war on terror. Descriptions: The Davis International House (I-House) is a non-profit community organization which acts as a resource to individuals and groups who are studying or visiting in the Northern California area. Our purpose is to promote respect and appreciation for all people and cultures. The I-House provides language classes, lectures and films, international dinners, dances, art exhibits and concerts, all with international themes. The I-House also manages the Friendship Program which matches internationals with local people for inter-cultural exchanges. There are also weekly social gatherings open to the entire community. Volunteers are used periodically for a variety of purposes, usually short term in nature. Volunteers may take on projects such as designing a poster, doing the research for an upcoming program, planning and managing one of our events, working with children on our International Summer Camp or Story Telling. Maintenance projects such as cleaning a room or doing yard work are also possibilities.

Descriptions: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has become a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression and violent conflict. IRC is at work in 25 countries, and IRC offices across America provide a range of assistance aimed at helping new arriving refugees settle, integrate, and acquire the skills to become self-sufficient. The IRC is active in the Sacramento region since 1990. In the past 15 years, our office has assisted thousands of refugees. Our network of staff, interns, and volunteers helps over hundred refugees annually. We help refugees daily by finding safe housing prior to their arrival, finding donations for our clients, assisting them in employment and legal application process, providing language and financial literacy training, promoting our projects... just to name a few. Volunteers are the backbone of the International Rescue Committee’s resettlement program. As a family mentor, English-as-a-Second-Language tutor, tour guide, employment assistant, office assistant, delivery driver, or any other type of contributor, volunteers provide immeasurable services to refugees. All IRC volunteers are highly valued for their tremendous contributions towards assisting refugees establish a new home and life in the United States. Volunteers are needed because refugees have many needs upon their arrival to the U.S. and the IRC has limited resources. Descriptions: The Mexican American Alcoholism program provides bilingual counseling for men and women who have problems with alcohol and/or drug addiction. The organization also provides group sessions for children ages 4-15 whose parents have a chemical dependency. The children's group sessions focus on self-esteem and the importance of staying in school. Volunteers are needed to assist staff counselors during children's educational games. Bi-lingual, bi-cultural skills are desired and knowledge of children and behavior problems is helpful. Hispanic AIDS Community Resources (HACER) was established in 1990 and is the AIDS prevention component of the Mexican American Alcoholism Program. Targeting Sacramento County's Hispanic/Latino communities, HACER's goal is to reduce the risk of HIV infection in the community by providing awareness and education. Spanish-speaking volunteers with an understanding of Mexican culture are needed. Descriptions: The MIND (Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders) Institute is an international, multidisciplinary research organization, committed to excellence, collaboration and hope, striving to understand the causes and develop better treatments and ultimately cures for neurodevelopmental disorders. Standing shoulder to shoulder, families, scientists, physicians, educators, and administrators are working together to unlock the mysteries of the mind. Neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism, fragile X syndrome and learning disorders are increasingly recognized. It is likely that you know an individual with one of these disorders. At the M.I.N.D. Institute, the "race is on" to identify the causes and develop better treatments, interventions, and preventions for the neurodevelopmental disorders that affect children and families around the world. Volunteer Services of the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute serves the patients, research participants, families, volunteers, staff and community of UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute and complements the patient care delivery system by providing unique and innovative services and opportunities. Volunteers work an average of four hours each week for a minimum period of four to six months, depending on the assignment and must be 16 years of age. Because staff relies on volunteers, as they would any other member of their team, volunteers are expected to honor their commitment and inform their departmental supervisor of absences for illness or vacation. Descriptions: Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization which is active both nationally and internationally, builds homes for low-income families. All of the construction is done by volunteers and most materials are donated. The Sacramento Habitat for Humanity builds 2-4 houses per year and sells them at no profit; their goal is to develop a sense of community, especially among the poorest populations in Sacramento. Eligible families are chosen based on need and level of income. Those families selected to purchase a house must put in 500 "sweat equity" hours, which are hours of labor in building homes. Human Corps has contacted the program and volunteers may work on building sites, helping with construction, painting, landscape and such. Office help (typing, mailing, phoning, etc.), fundraising and public relations are other volunteer options. Call the Habitat office for further information about volunteering, or the application process for a Habitat House. Descriptions: UNICEF is the only organization within the United Nations system dedicated exclusively to the welfare of children. UNICEF's concerns are the millions of children throughout the developing world whose basic rights to adequate nutrition, health care, and education remain unfilled. UNICEF assistance is provided through planning of services for children, supplies and equipment for these services, and funds to train the personnel needed to work with and for children. UNICEF is funded entirely by voluntary contributions. UNICEF programs take place in 119 countries where health needs are greatest in Latin America, Asia, and Africa. UNICEF also emphasizes training women for literacy and in the nutrition fields so they can help their own children. The Sacramento UNICEF Committee has a modest educational program, as well as fundraising. The all-volunteer gift shop is open year-round with UNICEF supplied gifts and cards and a selection of other international gifts from around the world. Fundraising collection boxes, brochures, videos, etc, are available from the Committee and assistance is always needed to solicit donations. TRIBUTE cards are available in the gift shop, with a minimum $10 donation, to honor persons. They are available in several designs with various printed messages. Descriptions: The International Training and Education Center (ITEC) has offered English language, technical and professional training to clients from around the world for more than 25 years. Because the programs enroll people from a number of countries, participants have opportunities to become involved in an intercultural exchange. Volunteers are needed to be American Conversation Partners. They will meet once a week for one hour with a foreign student learning English.
