Descriptions: The Acorn Mentoring Project is an action/reflection community service project run by CA House that connects UC Davis students with young people ages 5-15 in under-resourced neighborhoods of Sacramento for mentoring relationships through an after-school program on Tuesday afternoons. The Project involves weekly Tuesday mentoring sessions (leaving CA House at 3:10 p.m. and returning at 6:00 p.m.) and six Thursday reflection and planning seminars (at CA House from 3:10-4:30 p.m.). All student mentors must attend all Tuesday and Thursday meetings, but they may choose to participate in the Project purely as community service or for academic credit as well. The Project is considered a group independent study project through the UCD Human and Community Development Department, and academic credit is conferred on the basis of satisfactorily completing a writing component. While the Project is motivated by CA House’s spiritual and ethical commitment to improving human lives and society through community service and social justice work, the Project is non-sectarian and its content is not faith-centered. Typical Tuesday mentoring sessions involve: set-up, ice breakers, an opening circle meeting, a snack and conversation time, a values-based thematic craft, activity, or game, sports, time assisting the young people with homework, a closing circle, and cleanup. Typical Thursday seminars involve reflection on the recent mentoring visit(s), a presentation on a relevant topic or an issue related to mentoring, and planning time for the next mentoring session(s). In addition, the mentors plan one field trip or other event for the young people each quarter. It requires a one-year commitment, weekly phone calls and bi-monthly buddy get-togethers (just between the individual pairs, arranged on their own time). There are also group outings and chapter meetings throughout each quarter, as well as fundraising events. The organization needs students who are reliable and responsible to commit to a buddy for at least one year. They also offer associate membership for college students who would like to take part in Best Buddy functions, but cannot commit to a buddy of their own. Fundraising help is always welcome. Descriptions: The California Educational Partnership Consortium sponsors the Educational Partnership Week, an invitation to California business and community leaders to bring their talents to bear on the challenges of educating tomorrow's work force. It is an inspiring opportunity to gain fresh insights into the problems facing public education and to step up to the point of change to help make our schools work. The Week focuses attention on the strength and impact of a wide range of business / education partnerships, recognizes successful adopt-a-school programs and other efforts, and encourages commitments from previously uninvolved business and community leaders to get involved in the success of our students. When a volunteer spends time in a principal's office or a classroom, he or she is helping our young people recognize that there is something real about what they are learning. In addition, the volunteer obtains a fresh perspective into the problems and achievements of our educational system. The involvement of business in education is based upon the philosophy that the schools are preparing a work force; businesses have an investment in the future of their communities. The best place to make an investment, for both the bottom line and the community, is to help prepare young people for the work force of tomorrow. Descriptions: Yolo County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a 11 year old non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for abused, neglected, and abandoned children in foster care throughout Yolo County. Volunteers/Interns are needed to serve as stable friends and mentors for these children while also advocating for the child in court. A CASA volunteer/intern is matched in a one-on-one relationship with a foster child and engages in fun activities as well as taking the time to really get to know the child. CASA volunteers/interns then advocate in the court system for what they believe to be in the child’s best interest. Typically, volunteers/interns spend a flexible 3-5 hours per week with their case child or researching the case, for a period of about 18 months. CASA volunteers/interns must be at least 21 years of age, provide their own transportation, and complete 30 hours of mandated training prior to working with a child. If you are interested in helping an abused, neglected, or abandoned child in foster care, we invite you to attend an upcoming Information Session to get all your questions answered and pick up an application! Internship hours are available through this program. For more information, please check out our website www.yolocasa.org. Please feel free to contact Yolo County CASA at (530) 661-4200 or volunteer@yolocasa.org Keywords: youth, mentor/tutor
