King High Mentor Program
General Information about Martin Luther King High School
Martin Luther King High School is located on 530 B Street. With an enrollment of 76 students, this continuation school offers an alternative environment to students whose needs cannot be met in a traditional high school setting. King High's environment caters to the student's individual needs such as learning handicaps, conflicting work schedules, and parenting responsibilities.
What are King High Mentors?
King High Mentors are UC Davis students who tutor/mentor at Martin Luther King High School. Mentors assist King High students with homework and assignments during class. As King High students become more familiar with the mentors, they might want someone to talk to. In such situations, the mentors offer guidance and advice as appropriate
What does it take to be a King High Mentor?
Mentors should be:
-Approachable
-Open and Flexible
-Understanding
-Friendly
-Patient
It is also helpful to be outgoing since the students tend to wait for the mentors to approach and introduce themselves before they ask for help on schoolwork.
Additionally, mentors will work with one teacher and group of students for the entire time, thus forming a close-knit relationship with the teacher and students.
Why should I be a King High Mentor?
Since the students are each learning at a different level, faculty cannot cater to each student's needs at all times. Tutors help by giving students the individual attention they need when the teacher is with another student.
Mentors can also obtain Transcript Notation by completing at least 40 volunteer hours per quarter and the necessary paperwork.
We are looking for mentors who can commit to 2 or 3 hours a week at the same time every week. Consistency is very important to the students and faculty at King High.
