1. PE Program at North Davis Elementary School
North Davis Elementary School is currently accepting UC Davis interns and volunteers to be a part of their Physical Education Program. PE programs run on Tuesdays from 9:30-3:00 and on Fridays from 9:45-2:30.
We are looking for interns who have interest/experience with children and/or physical fitness. This is a perfect opportunity for Exercise Biology majors, athletes, or anyone interested in working outdoors with kids in a fun environment. Interns with an interest in physical education have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by helping to develop program curriculum as the quarter progresses.
The “Primary Elementary PE Coordinator” position is also listed on the Internship and Career Center (ICC) website (position reference #417311). Students interested in gaining credit or transcript notation from this position may contact Marti Hanna at the ICC at mjhanna@ucdavis.edu.

4. Help Kids with Reading in North Davis
North Davis Elementary School offers a reading club to its students fand would greatly appreciate some UCD volunteers. No experience necessary, but an interest in children and willingness to help are essential. The sessions run from 2:30 – 3:05 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – NO Wednesdays. North Davis Elementary is located at 555 East 14 th Street, just west of F Street and just east of the Yolo County Library and Davis High School. You may come any day, without prior notice, and we’ll get you started, but if you want to commit to a regular day of the week, that is terrific.

5. English Development class at Davis Senior High
I teach the English Development class at Davis Senior High. I have 17 students with different levels of English proficiency all combined in one class. It would be great if several UC students could help by working one-on-one with these students.

I am a French teacher at Davis High School in need of volunteers to help out in my classes. I have a particular need for students with strong language and literature skills for my Advanced Placement class of 29 students that combines students preparing for two separate AP tests—language and literature. This class meets on Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 9:57 to 10:49 A.M. and on Thursday from 8:55 to 10:26. A student with good skills would be extremely welcome so that I could split the class to work separately with each group.

7. Tutor with AVID
My name is Vlastimil Krbecek and I am Science/AVID teacher at Hiram Johnson HS, located at 6879 14th Avenue in Sacramento. Since I am and AVID/MESA coordinator, I am very interested in a possibility getting college tutors to support our AVID classes and help students with MESA projects.
At this point I am looking for 4 - 5 college students who would be willing to help in our AVID classes. They would be expected work with the teachers and help students with their English/ Math homework. 8. Acorn Mentoring Project

The Acorn Mentoring Project is an action/reflection community service project run by CA House that connects UC Davis students with young people ages 5-15 in under-resourced neighborhoods of Sacramento for mentoring relationships through an after-school program on Tuesday afternoons. The Project involves weekly Tuesday mentoring sessions (leaving CA House at 3:10 p.m. and returning at 6:00 p.m.) and six Thursday reflection and planning seminars (at CA House from 3:10-4:30 p.m.). All student mentors must attend all Tuesday and Thursday meetings, but they may choose to participate in the Project purely as community service or for academic credit as well. The Project is considered a group independent study project through the UCD Human and Community Development Department, and academic credit is conferred on the basis of satisfactorily completing a writing component.

You and your partner will meet at a time and location agreeable to you both. 10. Tutor at Holmes Junior High School, Davis

WHAT TO GAIN HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE IN THE CLASSROOM?
The Holmes Junior High School Homework Club is seeking eager U.C. Davis volunteers to tutor 7th and 8th grade students. Holmes is located several blocks away from campus, and the program meets every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoon from 3:30 to 4:30. Homework Club provides students and volunteers alike with a fun and relaxed learning environment. Students generally need assistance in math at the pre-algebra level, and tutors from all academic backgrounds are welcome.
11. Team Teach At-Risk Youth in Yolo County
Midtown Community School, Yolo County Conservation Partnership and Dan Jacobs School within Juvenile Hall need volunteers to help the teaching team in assisting Yolo County’s highest risk teenagers. These three schools, all located in Woodland, serve students from all five school districts within Yolo County who have been expelled, are frequently truant, or are incarcerated. Those special volunteers who respond must be willing to devote one or more morning hours twice each week to gain the trust of these students. This can be a really rewarding time to interact one-on-one or in small groups with teenagers who are trying to figure out better choices.

14. Yolo County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)-Volunteers Needed

Volunteer as a Child Advocate with Yolo County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). Volunteers are needed to become mentors, role models, and advocates for abused and neglected children in Yolo County.
By engaging in age-appropriate activities and getting to know the child, a CASA volunteer provides the court with pertinent information about the child's background and needs.
Volunteers report and make recommendations to the judge based on the child's best interests. Generally, volunteers spend 3-5 hours per week (depending on the case), for a period of at least 18 months, advocating for an abused or neglected child.
Qualifications:
- Must be 21 years of age
- Provide their own transportation
- Complete 30 hours of training prior to working with a child
- Must work 3-5 hours per week (depending on the case)
- Must commit to at least 18 months
Bilingual , male and multicultural volunteer advocates are URGENTLY needed .
Volunteers will:
- Network with important professionals,
- Gain experience in their field of interest,
- Learn new skills,
- Boost their resumes and
- Make a difference in the life of a needy child.

1. Peers Against Substance Abuse
We are currently seeking interns to fill the positions of Staff Counselor for our PASA Program (Peers Against Substance Abuse- see flyers for detailed descriptions). Interns will be expected to work 4 to 8 hours per week on Wednesday and/or Thursday, depending on their schedule for a minimum of 8 weeks. Our PASA program begins in October and runs through May, which means we are more than happy to accept interns who need at least 150 hours. Working hours will fall between the hours of 9am and 2:30p (yet to be determined).
We accept all students, preferably those who have some experience working with youth between the ages of 9 and 13 years old. We provide training and all materials. Interviews will take place September 18 to September 26. The program will begin October 3rd.

2. Unite for Site
Unite For Sight (www.uniteforsight.org) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers communities worldwide to improve eye health and eliminate preventable blindness.
Unite For Sight’s volunteers range from undergraduate and medical students, educators, nurses, and public health professionals to optometrists and ophthalmologists. The volunteers serve as interns at eye clinics. The eye clinic’s eye doctors and Unite For Sight volunteers jointly participate on community-based screening programs. The clinic’s eye doctors diagnose and treat eye disease in the field, and surgical patients are brought to the eye clinic for surgery. Unite For Sight funds the surgeries for those patients unable to afford eye care.

6. Hmong Elder Healthcare Internship
Since 2005, the Hmong Elder Program, a part of Opening Doors, Inc, has been serving the health access needs of the Sacramento Hmong elder community. Many are recent arrivals from a village near Wat Tham Krabok Temple in Thailand. The assistant will be gaining in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience about working with social services and the healthcare system. This is a great opportunity to be a leader and community advocate for the Hmong people of Sacramento.
This internship will be especially beneficial for individuals interested in public health, healthcare access, medical fields, psychology, social work, human development, community development, public policy, case management and advocacy
This volunteer (unpaid) position requires a 12 hour/week commitment for 6 months, and the schedule is flexible. At the end of the term, the intern will receive a recommendation letter for university applications and her/his future career.

1. Citizens Who Care
Citizens Who Care serves the elderly and their caregivers in Davis and Woodland with a variety of programs. Volunteers can participate in the following programs: Convalescent Hospital Volunteer: A convalescent hospital volunteer may choose to be matched with a resident whom they visit regularly or they can assist with group activities such as crafts and games. Within this program we have a pet visitation program. Volunteers can bring their well-behaved pet to the facility for regular visits. Volunteers are asked to volunteer for an hour a week. In-Home Respite Volunteer: A volunteer is matched with a client whose caregiver is in need of respite. Volunteers are asked to visit weekly for two hours. Volunteers for this program must be able to commit to a year of service. Time Off for Caregivers: This is a social program that is held at the Davis Senior Center two Saturdays of the month from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers can commit to long-term volunteering, or can choose to volunteer on a limited basis – even once is allowed. Volunteers are assigned to assist clients throughout the program. Staff includes a program director, volunteer coordinator and a health aide for clients in need of hands on assistance. Qualifications: friendly, interested in older adults, dependable, ability to work independently.

1.Saddle Pals Therapeutic Riding Center
UCP/Saddle Pals is a therapeutic riding center. We give horsebackriding lessons for children and adults with disabilities of all kinds. We have ongoing opportunites for people with and without horse experience. We are currently located in Orangevale. We ask for one hour a week, though if more hours are wanted it is possible. We are a premier accedited center by NARHA (North American Riding for the Hadicapped Association) which means that we have extremely high safety standards.
