What is an internship/co-op?
An internship or co-op is a work-learn experience in a professional environment that is guided, supervised and evaluated by professionals. As an intern, students can gain practical skills while working on special projects or ongoing work as well as make industry contacts.

What is the difference between an internship and co-op?
The terms internship and co-op are used interchangeably at UC Davis and the guidelines are the same for both.

Do interns get paid?
An internship can be paid or non-paid. Academic credit and transcript notation are not a substitute for pay.

Can I hire for a ‘virtual internship’?
Virtual internships must be closely supervised via phone and online communication and reviewed for feasibility and legitimacy by an ICC coordinator.

Who is responsible for worker’s compensation?
The internship site is responsible for Worker’s Compensation.

Is academic credit available to interns?
Students may be able to receive academic credit for an internship. For more information about the process of applying for academic credit for an internship, click here. Employers should not assume that academic credit will be granted for every internship.

What is transcript notation?
Transcript Notation is an official documentation of a student’s completion of an internship. Students can receive BOTH academic credit and transcript notation for the same internship. To learn more about transcript notation, click here.

When are students available to intern?
Students are available to work throughout the year. During the academic year (A 3 quarter year starting late September – mid-June) students typically work part-time (less than 20 hours a week).

How do you identify the best candidate?
Freshman through graduate students are eligible to participate in an internship, depending upon the needs of the organization. The intern sponsor determines the qualifications and skills needed for each position.
