EMERGENCY ROOM

Location: Sacramento
Description: The UCDMC Emergency Room is the only "Level 1" trauma center serving Northern California. Cases include drug overdoses, stabbings, gun shot wounds, chronic illnesses and multiple traumas. Volunteers may observe medical procedures with the approval of the charge nurse. A 4-hour shift per week is required.
Student Comments: "There weren't any skills that I needed when I started the
internship, which I thought was great because it gave students like me the chance
to explore different career opportunities. While interning at the UCDMC ER I
was able to have the experience of pushing patients to the x-ray room, calling
family members in to see patients, bringing blood/urine samples to the lab,
getting blood from the blood bank, helping stock the supply room, etc."
Requirements: Attend mandatory registration through the Internship & Career Center and UCD Medical Center orientation. Proof of Rubella and Rubella vaccination, and current TB Test must be shown at UCDMC orientation.

PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY ROOM
Organization: UCD Medical Center
Location: Sacramento
Description: The purpose of this UCDMC clinic is to treat infants through adolescents whose condition or illness does not warrant a trip to the emergency room. The volunteer duties may include taking and recording vital signs, cleaning and stocking rooms and some clerical work. The volunteer will also have the opportunity to observe examination and diagnosis of the patient. Interaction is primarily with nurses with some interaction with medical students and patients. A 4-hour shift per week is required.
Student Comments:"My responsibilities at the Pediatric Emergency room included
both clerical as well as clinical tasks. I was responsible for taking the patient's
vital signs. This included taking the patient's blood pressure, weight and height.
I was able to assist the nurses with visual and hearing screening given to the
patients when necessary. I was asked to chaperon female patients during pelvic
exams and other procedures that involved a male to female examination. I would
escort patients to X-ray, Ultrasound, and CT-Scan area of the hospital when
needed. Answering phones, transferring calls to the proper person and/or department
was also part of my responsibilities as an intern. I was able to listen to the
physicians discuss possible diagnosis's and/or problems associated with each
patient. I was able to watch the physicians, residents, and interns during an
actual examination."
"I never thought that I would be interested in an ER profession and this
internship gave me a completely different perspective. I thought that it would
be long hours and very stressful with blood everywhere as exhibited in the televsion
drama "ER". Aside from the occasional traumas like pedestrian/auto
accidents, motor vehicle accidents, or falls, most of the cases were fevers
or foreign objects shoved into an ear or nose. After this internship, I decided
I wouldn't mind working in the ER. I enjoyed the constant changing of patients,
it served as an adrenaline rush."
Requirements: Attend mandatory registration through the Internship & Career Center and UCD Medical Center orientation. Proof of Rubella and Rubella vaccination, and current TB Test must be shown at UCDMC orientation.

SUTTER HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOMS
Organization: SUTTER GENERAL & SUTTER MEMORIAL HOSPITALS
Location: Sacramento
Description: These ER's provide care primarily for non-critical trauma patients. The volunteer will observe emergency room procedures, interact with patients and carry out errands for the staff and patients. A 4-hour shift per week is required for TWO CONSECUTIVE QUARTERS. Shift scheduling is flexible.
Student Comments:" My first day of interning was amazing. The emergency room was packed. I was running everywhere doing stuff for everyone. I really did not know much so I had to ask a lot of questions but everyone was so friendly
and so ready to help. The doctors noticed how interested I was so they would always explain everything to me. I assisted in the transportation of patients from the ER to the Intensive Care Unit and other floors of the hospital. I regularly
changed the sheets on the gurneys after patients were discharged. Whenever the IV carts were low I took the initiative to stock them. My ER tech also put me in charge of the oxygen tanks. I had to check them on a regular basis and make sure there
was enough oxygen in them in case a patient needed it. This internship was everything I thought it would be and more. The experience I gained can not be learned through books or computers, it is something that needs to be done hands on."
Requirements: Attend mandatory registration through the Internship & Career Center and Sutter Hospital orientation. Proof of Rubella and Rubella vaccination, and current TB Test must be shown at Sutter orientation. Hepatitis B Vaccine Required
