Hospitalized Patient Care
BIRTHING
CENTER
Organization: UCD Medical
Center
Location: Sacramento
Description:Assist staff in labor and delivery. Attend to patient's needs. Interact
with RNs and MDs. Opportunity to view a delivery with permission. Average of 7
deliveries/day with most occurring during day hours. Many deliveries are to high-risk
patients (diabetes, heart/liver problems or "older" moms) and births may be complicated.
FEMALES ONLY!
Student Comments:"I had the
opportunity to see a forceps delivery…to stand in on a cesarean section…and see
two additional vaginal deliveries. My main duties included answering phones, stocking
the labor and delivery rooms with sufficient gowns, towels and other various supplies,
stocking the delivery carts, filing and pulling charts, bringing patients in,
weighing patients, and performing urine dip stick tests…The versatility of this
internship allowed me to do a little bit of everything; therefore, I always had
something to do…I highly recommend this internship to anyone who is willing to
learn quite a bit and feel like an active member of a very driven staff."
"It
was a very valuable experience and much more educational than I expected…I really
needed to be self motivated in this position because everyone's really too busy
to sit around and give you jobs and instructions…A lot of the nurses were also
very friendly and would take me with them when they went to check on patients…I
actually got to see two live births and two cesarean sections."
"I was able
to assist with patient triage and assessment by taking vital signs, including
temperature, blood pressure and weight. I also answered phones and did necessary
paperwork to admit patients…Everyone was willing to answer any questions I had
about hospital procedures or patient diagnosis…The residents I spoke with offered
me a lot of encouragement to pursue medical school and were willing to share their
own experiences…I would recommend an internship in the birthing center to anyone
who is truly interested in obstetrics and gynecology."
Requirements: TWO QUARTER COMMITMENT; FEMALES ONLY. Attend mandatory confirmation meeting through
the Internship & Career Center, UCD Medical Center orientation, and Birthing Center
Inservice. Proof of Rubella and Rubella vaccination, and current TB Test must

CARDIOLOGY
6 & CARDIOLOGY THORACIC STEP DOWN(POST-OP)
Organization: UCD Medical Center
Location: Sacramento
Description: This ward provides
care primarily to adults who have a cardiac diagnosis. Patients are monitored
on EKG and other machines. Volunteers will assist the nursing staff by taking
vital signs, weighing patients, answering call lights and providing psycho-social
support for patients. Opportunity to learn basics of telemetry (electronic monitoring
of hearts). A 4-hour shift per week is required.
Student
Comments:"The first night I was there I learned that my shift started
at the change of shifts of all the nurses, which explains the chaotic running
around I experienced every time I came in. I had quite a learning experience just
being around the nurses and their patients and observing what they did in each
case. Most patients were in this ward for massive heart problems, such as bypass
recovery, or infection of the internal organs, or they were just really ill. Occasionally,
after everyone settled into their shift, I would grab a seat in the station and
learn the basics of telemetry from the Telemetry Technician. These guys taught
me a ton about the electronic aspect of monitoring hearts, and their beats (mostly
irregular ones). I learned about how the electricity running through the heart
causes parts to contract, thus flowing the blood through the valves and so forth.
I was taught how to recognize certain characteristics of irregular heartbeats
such as PVC's and PAC's or someone that experienced a Bundle Branch Block."
"I
learned that helping out included anything from doing clerical work (such as breaking
down folders of patients who were being discharged from the unit, putting together
admission packets) to assisting the nurses when they performed certain procedures
(like bladder scanning, taking blood pressure, etc.)…One doctor allowed me to
watch him take out a patient's chest tube that was connected to her lung."
"The
majority of my duties were concentrated in patient care services…I helped the
medical staff by running various errands to other places in the hospital and also
by assisting the staff in various patient procedures. I also helped by learning
the computer systems to help with data entry…The internship required extensive
communication skills because I had to communicate with the doctors, nurses, technicians,
and the patients."
Requirements: Attend
mandatory confirmation meeting through the Internship & Career Center and UCD
Medical Center orientation. Proof of Rubella and Rubella vaccination, and current
TB Test must be shown at UCDMC orientation.

CHILD LIFE
Organization: UCD Medical Center
Location: Sacramento
Description: The Child Life ward provides
care and support for children who must remain in the hospital for an extended
period of time. Volunteers may see children with leukemia, cystic fibrosis, kidney
dysfunction, cancer, and children who have suffered from abuse and neglect. The
volunteers help these children work through their fears and concerns by organizing
play activities in the playroom and at bedside. Volunteers may accompany children
to the X-ray, chemotherapy and other treatments. A 4-hour shift per week is required.
Student Comments:"The first thing I would
do when I arrived was record all the inpatients that day with their room numbers
and specific directions. Then if there was someone to supervise the playroom,
I would walk around the floor to all the rooms listed to see if any of the patients
needed anything. The kids are encouraged to go to the playroom, as it gives them
leisure time and may relieve the stress of having to stay in bed 24 hours a day.
I spent most of the time supervising the playroom. It is a 'safe' place where
children can go to have fun and not be worried about medicine or nurses and doctors
questioning them. I was very impressed by the playroom's settings and the wide
range of activities and games provided for the kids. It is a relaxing place for
the patients, as well as their families, and many of the people are grateful to
be able to bring their children in."
"This internship has flown by. Every week
that I went there, I had an outstanding time and knew that the children I was
playing with or comforting were having a good time as well. The other volunteers
and I were always overwhelmed with the kids' enthusiasm; they were always thinking
up the activities and games that we should play."

INTERNAL MEDICINE / ENT
Organization:UCD Medical Center
Location:
Sacramento
Description: These wards
provide care for adult patients with chronic illnesses, infectious diseases and
medical problems resulting from substance abuse. Volunteers may see patients with
AIDS or cancer. The volunteer will assist the nursing staff in delivering care
and service to the patients and may include, feeding, bathing, assisting patients
in the restroom, escorting patients, changing sheets and some clerical work. Volunteers
can expect frequent interaction with patients and nurses. A 4-hour shift per week
is required.
Student Comments: "The most
crucial part of my volunteer experience was the direct patient contact I had the
opportunity to be a part of. It included rolling the patients over to one side
of the bed in order to change the soiled linen up to helping elderly patients
in putting on their robes and pants. Another duty that provided a lot of direct
patients contact was literally feeding the patients when their arms were too painful
to move. I most especially enjoyed it when nursing staff actually let me take
vital signs of some patients."

MIND INSTITUTE
Organization:UCD Medical Center
Location: Sacramento
Description: Volunteers will plan and engage in appropriate activities with children and some
adults who are waiting to be seen in the clinic or whose parents or caregivers
are being interviewed by clinic staff. Volunteers may engage in a range of activities
including reading to patients, playing board games or engaging in other recreational
activities suitable for a waiting room setting. Volunteers may also be asked to
assist with research tasks including data entry and word processing.
Student
Comments:"This institute dealt with children affected with neurological
disorders…This internship allowed for a lot of hands on experience as well as
exposing me to the entire picture of how my major might be applied in the work
force…One of my main tasks was to supervise many of the children in the waiting
room while their parents were being interviewed…allowed me to sit in on many interviews
with the parents…(and) watch many of the testing processes from behind the two-way
mirror."
"I gained a lot of knowledge about Neurological Diseases. The
majority of the cases that I observed involved Autism. My tasks there were to
help watch the kids while their parents were in conferences with the doctors.
There are two sides to the MIND Institute, a research section and the clinical
section. I mainly worked on the clinical side of the MIND Institute and for majority
of the time I had a chance to observe the actual testing done on these kids. The
most basic test that was done to sort out of a child has Autism or not was a test
called ADOS. This consist of asking the child to put together patterns that look
exactly like the patters that the doctors name, "house" playing to reveal the
imagination ability, asking them questions about their daily lives, asking them
to recognize objects and naming them, and testing for eyes and ear coordination."
"The
internship at the M.I.N.D. Institute has given me the experience I had hoped for
with autistic spectrum children. It has allowed me to have direct contact with
children affected by many different neurodevelopment disorders…At the Institute
my activities range from clerical duties to research oriented studies…I have found
that contact with the children and the researchers have been invaluable to my
education…Every day of work has been different and never really boring…I would
highly recommend it to anyone else interested in pediatric neurodevelopment disorders."

Description: This ward provides care primarily to adults who have undergone a transplant. Assist
staff by taking vital signs, answering call lights, and providing psychosocial
support for patients.
Student Comments:"On
an average day, my tasks included tidying the rooms, making beds, changing linen,
stocking supplies, and feeding patients. I have also assisted in bathing patients
and walking patients around the unit. My internship at the Transplant Unit was
everything I expected it to be - a great environment, a good learning experience,
and a wonderful addition to my life."
"Transplant Inpatient is
dedicated to patients that are either waiting for a transplant or have already
had a transplant and are in a critical state...Volunteering at UCDMC has given
me the confidence I need to be sure that I like dealing with sick people. If someone
has doubts about medicine or any health related professions, volunteering for
a few months will help them decide if they want to further pursue their career
goals or not. I strongly recommend volunteering at UCDMC just to get a feeling
about what it is like to work at a hospital and to work with sick people."
