If you are selected you will be required to:
show proof of immunizations (fill out the two forms included in packet)
-MMR, current TB (within 3 months), clear recollection of having had
chicken pox (Immunizations may be updated by your health care
provider or make an appointment at Cowell Health Center on campus.)
-attend a mandatory orientation at the hospital,
-make a 2 quarter commitment with minimum of 4 hrs/week,
-see a H&BS student advisor for transcript notation paper work and time
sheet.
-You must volunteer at least 40 hours in a quarter to be awarded
transcript notation (keep a time sheet!)
***schedule a drug screening test (urine sample screening for Rx and non-Rx drugs and alcohol) ***

DESCRIPTION OF VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENT
ACUTE CARE INPATIENT VOLUNTEER
Supervisor: Charge Nurse/Nurse Manager
Lillian Nelson, Volunteer Services Coordinator
Hours: Seven days per week/8:00am-8:00pm/3-4 hour shifts
Objectives: To provide clerical and patient activity support.
Requirements for Assignment:
English literacy. Bilingual in Spanish helpful.
Basic office skills helpful.
Positive interaction skills necessary.
Able to move heavy equipment (i.e. wheelchairs, beds)
Knowledge of childhood growth and development helpful.
Duties:
1. Report to assignment regularly and punctually. Contact
supervisor in advance if unable to report as assigned.
2. Answering telephones.
3. Basic filing and organizing of unit supplies, including
patient bedside stands.
4. Assisting in patient meals (tray prep, eating, etc.)
5. Reading, playing games, assisting patients in diversionary
activities.
6. Supervising patients in designated off unit areas.
7. Special projects as assigned.

AMBULATORY CARE
Supervisor: Ambulatory Care Nurse
Lillian Nelson, Volunteer Services Coordinator
Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday - Friday
Objectives: To assist in providing ambulatory care services.
Requirements for Assignment:
Physical ability to perform assigned tasks.
English literacy, Spanish-speaking very helpful.
Clerical/basic office skills.
Ability to interact sensitively with patients and families, maintaining
confidentiality and respect for multi-cultural clientele.
Duties:
1. Report to assignment regularly and punctually. Contact in
advance if unable to report as assigned.
2. Filing, compiling patient packets.
3. Escort patients to in-house appointments.
4. Provide patients with diversionary activities in waiting
area.
5. Special projects as assigned.

DESCRIPTION OF VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENT
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY VOLUNTEER
Supervisor: Pauline Wong, Occupational Therapy Manager
Lillian Nelson, Volunteer Services Coordinator
Hours: Monday through Friday - determined in conjunction with Occupational
Therapy Staff based on needs of Occupational Therapy Department.
Objectives: To assist in providing occupational therapy services. To familiarize
themselves with a working occupational therapy department.
Requirements for Assignment:
Physical ability to perform assigned tasks.
English literacy; Spanish speaking very helpful.
Ability to interact sensitively with patient and families, maintaining
confidentiality and respect for multi-cultural clientele.
Interest in pursing Occupational Therapy as a career.
Duties:
1. Report to assignment regularly and punctually. Contact
supervisor in advance if unable to report as assigned.
2. Become familiar with occupational therapy ADL equipment
and supplies.
3. Assist in maintenance of therapy work area (i.e. cleaning up
after activities, replacing supplies, replacing linen and filling
whirlpools).
4. Assist with PRE group and other patient treatment under
the direct supervision of a therapist.
5. Assist therapists with transporting patients.
6. Make photocopies at staff request.
7. Assist with fabrication and/or organization of test kits,
program activities (i.e. visual-motor, fine-motor).
8. Assist with organization of splinting area; become familiar
with types of materials, splinting purposes and assist with
fabrication.
9. Assist with equipment maintenance (i.e. wheelchair
storeroom, wheelchairs, paraffin, hydrocollator).
10. Assist with compiling routine ADL equipment lists and
become familiar with various adaptations available.

Hours: Sunday through Saturday - Determined in conjunction
Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life Manager based on
needs of Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life Department.
Objectives: To assist in providing Therapeutic Recreation services and
activities.
Requirements for Assignment:
Physical ability to perform assigned tasks.
English literacy; Spanish speaking very helpful.
Ability to interact sensitively with patient and families, maintaining
confidentiality and respect for multi-cultural clientele.
Ability to understand and support Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life
intervention.
Accountability for all policies and procedures that pertain to the
Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life department, Hospital
Administration, Infection Control, Safety and Volunteer Services.
Duties:
1. Report to assignment regularly and punctually. Contact
supervisor in advance if unable to report as assigned.
2. Maintain attendance record in the volunteer resource
manual.
3. Become familiar with Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life
Volunteer Resource Manual, equipment, and supplies.
4. Assist patients in selecting and participating in recreation
activities.
5. Provide individual attention to patients in isolation.
6. Assist and support Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life staff
in the implementation of structured activities.
7. To supervise patients in the central activity area during non-
structured free play sessions.
8. Provide input regarding needs of patients.
9. Provide input regarding new programs and/or activities.
10. Assist in planning and implementation of group activities.
11. Assist with special events or other special projects as
assigned.
12. Assist Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life staff on
therapeutic outings with patients.
13. Assist Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life staff during
aquatics sessions.
14. Assist in maintenance of Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life
work area (i.e. general cleaning of central activity area, clean
up after activities, returning equipment and supplies to
specified areas).

PHYSICAL THERAPY VOLUNTEER

Lori Burns, Volunteer Services Coordinator
Hours: Monday through Friday - Determined in conjunction with the Physical
Therapy Staff based on needs of Physical Therapy Department.
Objectives: To assist in providing physical therapy services. To familiarize
themselves with a working physical therapy department.
Requirements for Assignment:
Physical ability to perform assigned tasks.
English literacy; Spanish speaking very helpful.
Ability to interact sensitively with patient and families, maintaining
confidentiality and respect for multicultural clientele.
Interest in pursing Physical Therapy as a career.
Duties:
1. Report to assignment regularly and punctually. Contact
supervisor in advance if unable to report as assigned.
2. Become familiar with physical therapy equipment and
supplies.
3. Assist in maintenance of therapy work area (i.e. cleaning up
after activities, replacing supplies, replacing linen and filling
whirlpools).
4. Assist with equipment maintenance (i.e. crutch/wheelchair
storeroom, wheelchair's, hydrocallotor).
5. Assist therapists with exercise groups (i.e. PRE, mat group,
wheelchair mobility group) under direct supervision of
therapist.
6. Assist therapists in transfers or in manual support under
direct supervision of a therapist.
7. Provide one on one attention to patients spending time in
standing frame, in traction, on prone stander, or in
whirlpool.
8. Assist patients in routine mat exercise programs under
supervision of the treating therapist.
9. Assist therapist in pool exercise programs.
