Procedures include upper and lower endoscopies, laser therapy, biliary procedures, liver biopsies, dilations and motility studies. The volunteer will observe procedures, set up examination rooms and stock supplies. Because the clinic utilizes video equipment for procedures, there is an opportunity to observe procedures on TV monitors. A 4-hour shift per week is required Student Comments: "The first thing I was expected to do at the GI lab was to make sure that all the gurneys (12) were made up. I then went to each of the four procedure rooms and checked the C-carts for supplies. I would take inventory and then go into the supply cart and restock them. I also had to make sure the supply of IV bags was replenished as they went though those rather fast. After all the rooms and carts were stocked I went into each room and set them up for a procedure. The GI lab usually did one of four procedures; an endoscopy, a flex/sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy, a liver biopsy or a paresenthesis. After the procedure I was supposed to clean the rooms and strip down the beds."

GENERAL PEDIATRICS CLINIC
Organization: UCD Medical Center
Location: Sacramento
Description: This clinic environment is similar to a private pediatrician's office. Volunteers spend the majority of their time helping nurses with in-take procedures such as weighing patients, measuring height, inputting patient data into the computer and filing patient records. Volunteers will have the opportunity to observe the staff with direct patient care. A 4-hour shift per week is required for TWO CONSECUTIVE QUARTERS. Student Comments: "My tasks at the clinic revolve around serving patients, not only directly, but also indecrectly, For instance, every morning I stocked each room with the necessary items such as: bandages, table rolls, iodine swabs, alcohol wipes, etc... An example of indirect service to patients is providing rooms with books and magazines to entertain both the children and parents while they patiently wait in the exam rooms. However, I was also given the privelege to work with patients directly. This was the best part of the internship." Requirements: Attend mandatory registration through the Internship & Career Center and UCD Medical Center orientation. Proof of Rubella and Rubella vaccination, and current TB Test must be shown at UCDMC orientation.

Observe procedures for pump installation/adjustments including synchromed (for pain medication) and ommaya reservoir (treatment for fungus infection). A 4-hour shift per week is required. Student Comments: "My first duty everyday was to fold appointment confirmation forms along with other material for the clinic and send it to all the patients that were scheduled to come into the clinic within a couple of months. I was also asked to alphabetize the forms used when patients called into the clinic to speak to a nurse. Although this was a tedious task, I realize that it was essential that I did not make a mistake as finding the forms at later times was of the utmost importance. I was also asked to complete packets for nurses for examining patients. In these packets, I would include betadine swabs, a bandage and gloves. Finally, when all such duties and assignments were completed, I was allowed to shadow a physician's assistant as well as a neurosurgeon. I witnessed many cases at the clinic and the PA and doctor were kind enough to take the time to explain all aspects of the things I was seeing. They included me in their discussions and always introduced me to the patients."

An 8-hour shift per week is required. Student Comments: "My duties as an intern were essentially to assist the Hospital Assistant (HA) with his duties. These duties included cleaning operating rooms after use, running specimen samples to the lab, transporting patients, getting the proper instruments needed for each operation, and other basic tasks that ensured that the surgeons, technicians, and nurses had everything they needed for their operation to proceed smoothly. I did this for the majority of the beginning of my internship. After a whilte I began to acutually observe operations." "My experience this quarter in the UCDMC operating room has been, by far, the most interesting and fulfilling area of the hospital that I have worked for in the past. Even the first day on site was exciting! Upon my arrival on the OR floor at 7am, I was confronted with a bustling crowd of doctors and nurses. They all congregated around a wall-sized board with all kinds of codes. Just this sight of so many active people woke me up and made me want to be involved. I learned how to set up the operating room for the next scheduled surgery. Depending on the type of surgery planned, the room had to be set up in a certain way so that the doctors have everything necessary when operating begins. One day I was able to observe the dissection of an ovarian tumor. The pathologist allowed me to pull on gloves and feel the tissue samples and assist her in maneuvering the larger tumor while she cut little slices to be analyzed. This quarter's internship in the OR has been both rewarding and memorable. It definitely exceeded my expectations and I would love to one day be a part of this arena."

make sure all the exam rooms were cleaned and the supplies stocked, before patients
were admitted. Once the clinic opened, I assisted the head nurse by calling
in the patients from the waiting room, and taking their vitals. Next, I led
the into the xam rooms and then notified the physicians in their office, by
filling out a sheet posted on the wall the keeps track of patients' ID information,
reason of visit, exam room, arrival time, etc. The rest of my time at the clinic
consisted of little errands for the nurses and staff to fetch something or to
communicate some information to the patients or workers in the clinic. A lot
fo times I had the opportunity to observe and assist the nurses when they needed
to draw blood on the patients or give certain treatments."
