Student
Comments: "I was able to interact directly with patients in taking resting,
exercise, and recovery blood pressures, running exercise stress tests, and demonstrating
stretching/resistance training exercises. I felt involved and helpful in facilitating
with the busy work environment. The first day, I immediately integrated into the
work area by taking blood pressures and showing new comers how to use a heart
monitor. Amazing enough, I felt very comfortable and at ease learning routine
procedures such as entering patients into the computer for billing purposes. After
a couple of days, I became familiar with several patients and began to develop
a rapport with them, encouraging them through their workout program."
"My activities
as an intern involved many things from observing patient counseling and exercise
sessions, organizing monthly bulletin boards regarding nutrition, analyzed food
records of patients using the computer program Nutritionist 5 and co-chairing
the potlucks held twice a month. I also completed an at home project where I researched
a heart related topic that will be included in the newsletter coming up soon."

Location:
Sacramento
Description: Observe the UCDMC occupational
therapist providing hand therapy rehabilitation. Therapy combines modalities used
by both occupational therapist and physical therapist. Patients range in age from
infant to geriatric. A 4-hour shift per week is required.
Student
Comments: "I was fortunate enough to get a chance to learn some basic concepts
of hand therapy. I watched while the therapist provided sensitivity testing for
sensitivity of fingers. I learned how much the patients are able to respond to
stimulus and possible nerve degeneration at fingertips. I was also allowed to
do message and ultrasound for reducing pain and getting blood circulating in the
injured area of the hand. Furthermore, I also assisted therapists with preparation
of contrast water baths (warm and cold), and heat packs. While talking to the
hand therapist I learned not only some of the basic hand therapeutic techniques
but also the underlying purpose of the therapy."

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Organization:
UCD Medical Center
Location: Sacramento
Description:UCDMC,
Neurobehavioral Cognitive Services, Regional Center for Rehabilitation. Occupational
therapists assist patients in relearning a variety of daily activities including
eating, dressing and personal hygiene. OT's also help patients regain control
and function of their arms and hands. Additionally, therapists order wheelchairs
or other equipment, which allow patients to function safely and independently
in the home environment. Volunteers will observe the OT and assist patients during
"exercises." A 4-hour shift per week is required.
Student
Comments: "Occupational Therapy is therapy for all injuries and conditions
presenting daily living activity movements such as getting out of bed, getting
dressed, and cooking. There are many different types of patients who need to go
through occupational therapy: burn, cardiac, stroke, automobile accidents, surgery,
and developmentally delayed patients. Before each therapy session, the therapist
looks over the patient's personal medical information and doctor's notes on what
kind of therapy is needed for that patient. Then the therapist see the patient
and makes an initial evaluation on how well the patient is able to care for themselves.
As a volunteer I not only observed the occupational therapist but also assisted
them. This assistance was characterized by helping them obtain items for the patient,
photocopying therapy packets, organizing the equipment closet, making evaluation
packets, and observing and assisting the therapy sessions. From this experience
I learned what occupational therapy is about and what kind of care and dedication
it takes to care for patients who are unable to fully care for themselves."

PHYSICAL THERAPY - OUTPATIENT
Organization:
UCD Medical Center
Location: Sacramento
Description:Volunteer
interns may help patients perform exercises in the gym or pool. A 4-hour shift
per week is required.
Student Comments: "During
a typical day there, I would remake the patient beds after use and have them ready
for the next patients to be seen. I would replace physical therapy equipment such
as hot and cold packs in their proper place after use and place used linen in
plastic bags that I would later take back to the laundry area. Medical charts
for patients being seen the following day need to be pulled, and it was usually
my primary duty to make sure that these charts were retrieved and placed in the
appropriate therapist's box. I have been able to observe several aquatic pool
exercises, a couple of back exercises, therapy after an Achilles Tendon injury
and a leg strengthening routine after a patent had broken his leg."

PHYSICAL THERAPY - REHABILITATION
Organization:
UCD Medical Center
Location: Sacramento
Description:
Help patients perform exercises in the gym which strengthen and manipulate muscles.
Learn modalities, prepare ice and heat packs, and stock supplies.Volunteer interns
may help patients perform exercises in the gym and help transport patients to
and from the wards. A 4-hour shift per week is required.
Student
Comments: "My main responsibilities were to observe one of the therapist
as and assist them when they needed it. A lot of the times, I was interacting
with the patient in various stabilization and balance exercises. It ranged from
merely "spotting' the patient to playing soccer and basketball. I also helped
minimally with transfers, if needed, and I was often times responsible for transporting
the patient from therapy to their next destination. There was minimal clean up
to do there. Everything was so fast paced, from one patient to the next, that
I didn't have to spend any extra time straightening things up. However, after
each patient, I did change the pillowcases and clean the mat, if necessary. Sometimes
when we were waiting for the next patient, I would read the medical charts on
the patients to increase my awareness of the problem and help understand what
is happening. Lastly, all of the therapists like to see the volunteers get involved
by displaying some degree of initiative. I think this is one of the main reasons
why I was able to work with so many of the patients."

Woodland

child and/or parent; questions will be answered afterward. Second quarter (10
weeks) will include some "hands-on" work in Physical or Occupational Therapy.
Children range in age from 0-13, with majority being pre-schoolers. The center
provides a multidisciplinary program of continuing physical (PT), occupational
(OT) and speech and language therapy for infants, toddlers, and children through
adolescent age. We serve children with a variety of special needs, various types
of disabilities and birth defects. Some of these special needs include cerebral
palsy, spina bifida, developmental/learning delays, cleft palate, severe speech
and/or feeding disorders, Down's syndrome, and orthopedic or neuromuscular problems.
We serve approx. 200 children and infants in our well equipped, modern Center
as well as in homes and schools throughout Yolo and Sacramento Counties. JUNIORS
OR SENIORS ONLY. FINGER PRINTING REQUIRED. $10.00 COST TO STUDENT.
Student
Comments: "The atmosphere of the clinic is comfortable and non-threatening.
All staff members are extremely qualified in dealing with the children who range
from toddlers to elementary aged children. The therapists' posses genuine concern
for their clients and communicate well with both the child and parent. This quarter
my supervisor allowed me to participate in activities and even allowed me to conduct
certain activities on my own. I gained valuable experience in speech therapy and
helping toddlers who were developmentally delayed and therefore not speaking very
much. I learned techniques to lengthen their attention span and calm the young
patients. The experience I obtained from this internship will undoubtedly leave
me better prepared for my goals in the future."
