Cardiac Rehabilitation - Exercise
UCD Medical Center - Sacramento

Observe and assist in the treatment and management of patients who have undergone heart bypass surgery, heart attack, angioplasty or those who have risk factors for heart disease. Interact with patients by taking resting, exercise and recovery blood pressures. Demonstrate stretching/resistance-training exercises. MUST SIGN-UP FOR 2 SLOTS - 6 hours minimum!

Assist nurses and exercise physiologist in delivery of out-patient services. Work with cardiac rehab patients in exercise and education classes. Requirements: Exercise biology major preferred, with exersize physiology course and/or experience.

Chiropractic Clinic - Woodland

Observe chiropractor during patient treatment. Volunteers will observe chiropractic procedure, learn how a private practice is run, and observe patient interaction. Students may also have opportunity to learn about other therapies chiropractors recommend, such as massage therapy. MUST SIGN-UP FOR 2 SLOTS - 6 hours total!

Occupational Therapy
Northern California Children's Therapy Center

The Center provides a multidisciplinary program of continuing physical (PT), occupational (OT) and speech and language therapy for infants, toddlers, and children through adolescent age. We serve children with a variety of special needs, various types of disabilities and birth defects. Some of these special needs include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, developmental/learning delays, cleft palate, severe speech and/or feeding disorders, Down's syndrome, and orthopedic or neuromuscular problems. Children range in age from 0-13, with majority being pre-schoolers. We serve approximately 200 children and infants in our well-equipped, modern Center as well as in homes and schools throughout Yolo and Sacramento Counties. The first quarter of the internship will consist of observation of Center staff. In the second quarter, internship will include some "hands-on' work. Previous experience in an occupational therapy, physical therapy, or speech internship is required. TWO QUARTER COMMITMENT IS MANDATORY.

The majority of the time will be spent observing clinicians with their patients as appropriate. Volunteers may be asked to assist professional staff with such tasks as folding and putting linen away; the preparation of mats, whirlpools and other equipment as needed, the filing of ultrasound gel bottles and ice cups; assist with clerical tasks; other duties as deemed appropriate. Must be planning for a career in Physical, Occupational, or Speech Therapy.

Students are oriented to the use of the gym equipment, some modalities, and the general functioning of the out-patient physical therapy clinic. Interns are expected to become active participants in the functioning of the clinic, working with patients and administering a variety of treatments. REQUIREMENTS: Junior or senior Standing. Courses in Anatomy and Physiology completed. Must be enthusiastic and hardworking!

Speech Therapy
UCD Medical Center - Sacramento

Observe speech therapy evaluations and record results, answer patients' non-medical questions and assist with completion of forms. Patients may be victims of stroke, face/neck trauma, or need therapy for laryngectomy (voice box replacement).

Mandatory Confirmation Meeting: Attendance at a confirmation meeting is required for all internships. Day and time will be provided when you sign-up. Be on time to this meeting or your spot may be given away. Any internship openings will be given to students who were unable to obtain an internship placement during sign-ups. Meetings last approximately 1 hour and you must stay the entire time. Bring student ID, paper, pen, class schedules, and your internship placement confirmation email (the 2nd email).

Mandatory Orientation: The hospitals and some private clinics have a mandatory orientation that you must attend before volunteering. The day and time of your orientation (if applicable) will be provided when you sign up. If an orientation is required for your internship and you do not attend, you will be dropped from your internship with a penalty.

Immunizations: Proof of Rubella and Rubeola vaccination, and TB test (within the last 10 months) required for many internships. Details will be provided when you sign-up. Please see your private physician or Cowell Student Health (752-2300) for immunizations.
